Creative partnership … University joins with Ipswich Art Gallery

UQ and the Ipswich Art Gallery have announced a three-year sponsorship arrangement for The University of Queensland Gallery within the Ipswich Art Gallery. Negotiated through the Ipswich Arts Foundation, The University of Queensland Gallery will feature contemporary and new media exhibitions. An upcoming exhibition will focus on works by UQ’s own students. Multimedia and Interactive Design: Works by Graduating Students will be on display from November 17, 2007, until February 3, 2008.

Summer of learning … apply now for summer semester

Travel trends … great prizes for completing bridge survey

Students and staff at St Lucia campus are invited to participate in an online questionnaire survey of travel choices to the campus following the opening of the Eleanor Schonell Bridge in December, 2006. Remembering Steve … memorial lecture examines crocodile tracking

UQ crocodile specialist, Professor Craig Franklin, a friend and colleague of the late Steve Irwin, will deliver a public lecture on Wednesday, November 14, in tribute to Mr Irwin’s remarkable contributions to crocodile research and wildlife conservation. UQ will also present the posthumous Steve Irwin Adjunct Professorship to Terri Irwin, AM. Arts research … apply now for $10,000 Fryer Library award

The Fryer Library, the UQ Library, and the Faculty of Arts seek applications for the 2008 Fryer Library awards. These $10,000 awards provide successful applicants with institutional support and affiliation to the Faculty of Arts to research Australian literature, history and culture, using the Fryer Library collections. Applications are particularly invited in the following areas: Indigenous studies; history of architecture; art and design; and theatre and literary studies. Details .....

BEL call … applications closing soon for postgraduate scholarships

The BEL Faculty is offering Commonwealth-supported postgraduate scholarships to general staff employed in full-time continuing appointments for at least two years. Applicants must apply separately for admission to one of the Faculty’s postgraduate coursework programs and provide evidence they have been admitted to a relevant program. EPSA offers … postgraduate scholarships for general staff

The Faculty of EPSA also offers Commonwealth-supported postgraduate scholarships to general staff members (full-time for at least two years) who gain admission to postgraduate coursework programs within the Faculty. Beyond Visitor Numbers … staff invited to museums and galleries seminar

Keynote speakers, Lauren Parker of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and Associate Professor John Armstrong, of the Philosophy Department, University of Melbourne, will present diverse perspectives on the development of public programs in galleries and museums at a seminar on Monday, November 19. Respondents include Nick Mitzevich (UQ Art Museum); Nicholas Chambers (Queensland Art Gallery/GoMA); Dr Morris Low (UQ); and Emma Nicolson (Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney). Gallery Services Queensland, the UQ Art Museum and the Museum Studies program in the School of English, Media Studies and Art History will present the seminar. University challenges … staff invited to hear results of executive survey

For the past two years, Blackboard has undertaken an extensive review of global challenges from the perspective of executive leaders in higher education. In 2007, interviews were conducted with 20 senior executives and administrators from a sample of Australian universities. This presentation, by Zach Johnson, Global Services Asia Pacific, Blackboard, will focus on challenges including: Differentiation; Funding; Accountability and Quality; and the Teaching Research Nexus. Trivia tragics … win the jackpot at quiz night

The UQ Staff and Graduates Club’s monthly quiz night continues on Wednesday, November 14, at 6pm for a 6.30pm start, for teams of up to six players. Content includes three general knowledge rounds, an audio round, a pen-and-paper task and five questions on a movie of the month – this time, it’s an Australian film with a particularly relevant theme – Don’s Party (1976). Have your say … eResearch focus groups

UQ eSpace focus groups at St Lucia enable academics to comment on eResearch issues at UQ. The 90-minute group sessions include either lunch or afternoon tea and available times are Thursday, November 8 (noon–1.30pm or 2pm–3.30pm), or Tuesday, November 20 (11.30am–1pm or 1.30pm–3pm). Manning Clark House, assisted by funding from Australian copyright management company Copyright Agency Limited (CAL), invites applications for residential fellowships in 2008. The Fellowships enable recipients to write and conduct research, staying at the Canberra home in which historian, Professor Manning Clark, his wife Dymphna, and their family lived and worked. eLearning feedback … anonymous input sought

Whether you have attended any staff development sessions on eLearning and Blackboard or not, please spend 15 minutes to provide your anonymous feedback so TEDI can better assist you in the future. TEDI researchers are interested in finding out how TEDI eLearning staff development offerings have impacted on teaching practices and how to provide better opportunities for all UQ staff in the future. A survey, where participating and non-participating staff can provide feedback, is open from November 5 to 30.

Schizophrenia profile … healthy volunteers needed for research

UQ researchers are seeking volunteers aged between 18 and 65 with no personal or family history of mental illness to participate in a project investigating the genetic profile of schizophrenia. Volunteers will participate in a two-part process, including a neuropsychological assessment and blood test. All participants will be reimbursed. Details: Julie or Kelly or telephone ext. 55482.

Bone tone … healthy volunteers needed for control study

Healthy control volunteers aged between 7–17 are required to help researchers using new technology, peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT), to investigate the development of, and interaction between, muscle and bone in young individuals with Cystic Fibrosis compared to healthy controls. Participants will be required to attend the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH), Herston, for three hours, once only. Tests will be performed to assess bone and muscle function. Testing sessions will be held during school holidays. Parking fees will be met by the Children’s Nutrition Research Centre. Details: Denise Brookes or phone ext. 64936.

Carpal tunnel … volunteers sought to test new, non-surgical treatment

The Division of Physiotherapy is developing a novel treatment for the non-surgical management of carpal tunnel syndrome. Researchers are seeking volunteers who have a medical diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome, have not received physiotherapy or occupational therapy in the past three months and who have not had treatment for neck pain in the past year. Volunteers are required for a single, one-hour treatment session in the Therapies Building, St Lucia campus. Details: Lieszel Plumbe.
