Personal perspectives … winning self-portrait on display

Sydney artist, Ben Quilty, has won the University’s prestigious $40,000 National Artists’ Self-Portrait Prize, with his painting now on view in the UQ Art Museum, alongside other entries. The Director of the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra, Andrew Sayers, judged the inaugural prize, which was announced at the weekend. Thirty Australian established and emerging artists submitted works to this invitation-only prize, which will be held bi-annually. The Margaret Hannah Olley Foundation supported the 2007 prize. The Self-Portrait Prize continues to February 10, 2008; the exhibition Reveries: Photography & Mortality closes on November 4. Details: ext. 53046 and www.maynecentre.uq.edu.au.

Summer of learning … apply now for summer semester

Make the most of your break by choosing from almost 250 undergraduate and postgraduate summer semester courses, ranging from accounting to zoology. You don’t need to be a current UQ student to apply and undergraduate courses are HECS–HELP eligible. Leadership change … SMI enters new era

Professor Don McKee will step down as director of UQ’s Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) at the end of the year after six years at the helm. He will be replaced by Professor Chris Moran, who is the current director of the Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry (CWiMI), one of six centres in the SMI. More…

The University has notified the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries that horses in paddocks at its Pinjarra Hills facility are exhibiting symptoms of equine influenza.

Gija speaker sought … UQ Art Museum exhibition

The UQ Art Museum is keen to contact a Gija speaker to help with a forthcoming exhibition. The exhibition, Paddy Bedford, organised and toured by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, opens at the UQ Art Museum in mid-November 2007. Born around 1922 on Bedford Downs Station in the remote East Kimberley region of Western Australia, Mr Bedford began painting on canvas and board in 1998 and continued until his recent death in 2007. Multimedia display … ITEE graduates showcase their work

The Multimedia & Interaction Design Graduate Exhibit will showcase the works of graduating students from the Information Environments Program (School of ITEE), on October 31, from 6pm to 9pm, at Building No.1 (Ipswich campus). Plunge into science … places left for Siemens Science Experience

The Siemens Science Experience (TSSE), held from January 22–24, 2008, is packed with social activities, workshops, games, competitions and guest speakers. More than 200 Year 9 students will attend. Although enrolments have officially closed, limited places at UQ are still available. If a career in science or engineering interests your son or daughter, they can apply online.

Needn’t be taxing … last chance to lodge returns

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) advises that tax returns should be lodged before October 31. The most efficient method is by using an e-tax from www.ato.gov.au. You can also lodge using a traditional paper return. TaxPack 2007 is available from newsagents or Tax Office shopfronts or by phoning 1300 720 092. People eligible to use a short tax return will have received a mailed copy and can lodge over the phone by calling 13 28 65. People concerned they won’t meet the October 31 deadline or who need assistance, should phone the Tax Office on 13 28 61 between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday.

Managing healthcare change … UQ, Harvard residential workshop

UQ and Harvard Medical International are co-presenting the Program for Leaders in Medical and Healthcare Education in a collaborative initiative, based on the Harvard Macy Institute Model. The program is designed for leaders with major responsibilities for healthcare education across disciplines, especially leaders introducing or managing significant organisational change for innovation in their institutions. This residential workshop will be at the Australis Noosa Lakes Convention and Exhibition Centre from December 2–7. Register online or contact cme@uq.edu.au before October 30.

Maintaining grades records … register for SI-net module

Training on the Maintaining Student Grades module in SI-net is being held on Thursday, November 1, from 2pm–4pm in Room 509, Level 5, JD Story Building. This session is for staff who have not previously attended training for this module and who require access to this functionality. Register via TEDI.

Freshen up … SI-net refresher training offered

Staff who have previously attended this training but may need a refresher on Maintaining Grades and the Grade Upload Process can attend a session in the Senate Room, Brian Wilson Chancellery, St Lucia, on Thursday, November 8, between 10.30am–11.30am. No registration required.

UQ Secretaries and Office Professionals Association (UQSOPA) is planning its annual conference to be held on Thursday, October 25, from 8.30am–4pm, at The Meeting Place, Sir William MacGregor Drive (at the athletics track), St Lucia campus. Underground simulation … male drivers needed for study

Male drivers are needed (aged 20-45 years) for an obstacle avoidance driving task (one 90-minute session) in a VR simulation of an underground shuttle car. $15 will be provided to volunteers. Male participants should have at least two years’ driving experience and not be susceptible to motion sickness. The experiment is located in the VR Lab, in the Human Movement Studies Building, St Lucia. Contact Christine.

Mentally tough … UQ SPORT seminar

A UQ SPORT seminar will probe resilience inherent in many champion athletes and help identify and develop the characteristics that make up a mentally tough athlete. Held on Wednesday, October 31, from 6.30pm–9pm, guest speakers include the University’s leading sports psychology academics.

Sporting blues … UQ SPORT holds annual awards dinner

UQ’s elite athletes and officials will be honoured at the prestigious Blues and Sports Awards Dinner on Friday, November 2. Guest speakers will be Australian Olympic gold medallist, Kieren Perkins, and AFL triple premiership player, Luke Power, of the Brisbane Lions.
