Staff excellence awards
UQ wishes to recognise individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the achievement of the strategic objectives of the University. The Vice-Chancellor is delighted to announce the introduction of two new awards for staff: The Chancellor's Award for Individual Excellence and the UQ Leadership Award. Nominees are to be proposed by sponsors who can be either a supervisor or other member of staff. Staff are encouraged to nominate colleagues who are exemplary leaders or individual contributors. Qld invention keeps a healthy eye on waterways
South-East Queenslanders now have unprecedented access to detailed data showing the health of their waterways, following the launch of the 2009 Ecosystem Health Report Card. Thanks to a new state-of-the-art data-integration system known as Health-e-Waterways, current and historical Ecosystem Health Report Card grades for catchments, estuaries and bay zones are just a few key strokes away. Senate Standing Committee for Equity, Diversity and the Status of Women (EDSW)
Expressions of interest are called for a number of positions on this Committee: one representative of Heads of Schools; Chair, Disability Subcommittee; and a representative of EDSW on each of the three subcommittees (Disability, Cultural and Linguistic Diversity and Indigenous Australians (CALDIA) and Gender Equity). UQ nabs ninth consecutive Qld Rhodes Scholarship

UQ researchers receive Bill & Melinda Gates funding
Developing a portable screening device for malaria and using mobile phones to diagnose pneumonia are two UQ research projects which have received support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The projects are among 76 Grand Challenges Explorations grants awarded worldwide, each worth $US100,000. Read full story online.
Major changes to travel along Coronation Drive
From Sunday, November 1, major traffic changes will affect both inbound and outbound lanes on Coronation Drive between Cribb Street and the Merivale Rail Bridge. These changes will take place over a maximum four-month period and are required to complete construction of the Coronation Drive overpass. Details: online.
UQ iTunes U website launched
A new UQ iTunes U website is now available. Visit the website to find out more about UQ iTunes U, which will provide a convenient new way for the University to distribute digital content to the public and to students. Seminars, lectures and marketing material will be made available to the world, or to specific courses (in the second phase of the project), via this popular Apple product. The project team is looking for media content for the UQ iTunes U site. If you would like to contribute material, or find out more about the project, visit the website.
Queensland International Fellowships workshop
This workshop is designed for researchers interested in applying for a Queensland International Fellowship and covers all aspects of the application process. It will be held from 10.30am - 11.30am on Tuesday, November 3, in the AIBN Seminar Room, ground floor, building 75 (corner College and Cooper Rds, St Lucia campus). The Fellowships program enables Queenslanders to undertake collaborative scientific research or policy development projects at leading international institutions, government agencies and/or private sector research organisations. Understanding Planet Earth: subduction zones
Director of Research in the School of Earth Sciences at the Australian National University, Professor Brian Kennett will discuss our current understanding of subduction zones - a crucial part of our dynamic planet, and the cause of many earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes. The seminar will focus on what geophysical data (for example, seismic tomography, or "CAT scans of the planet") can reveal about the deep workings of these zones, and will be held from 1pm-2pm on Friday, October 30, in room 221 at the School of Earth Sciences, Steele Building. Doing business in a carbon-constrained world
Ecofund (a Queensland Government-owned company) and UQ (through the School of Integrative Systems) are proud to present "Business Management in a Carbon Constrained World" — a three-day executive training course to be held in Brisbane on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, November 23, 24 and 25 this year. This practical course is designed to assist sustainability, environment and carbon managers as well as principal decision-makers to manage their organisations' carbon liabilities under existing and pending legislation. It is also relevant to all organisations wishing to gain an extensive understanding of carbon markets and management in a "carbon-constrained world" — whether for compliance purposes or to position their organisations as green leaders. Reinvigorating Australian federalism
The TC Beirne School of Law's Dr Nicholas Aroney will discuss the above topic as part of a Centre for Public, International and Comparative Law public lecture on Wednesday, November 4. The event, to be held from 5.30pm in the Banco Court, level 2 of the Supreme Court Building, 304 George Street, Brisbane, will be followed by a book launch of The Constitution of a Federal Commonwealth (Cambridge University Press) by former Justice of the High Court of Australia, The Honourable Ian Callinan AC QC. 2009 Young and International Alumnus of the Year Awards
The Young and International Alumnus of the Year Awards recognise and honour the achievements of outstanding UQ graduates who have achieved distinction in their chosen fields and an outstanding reputation among their peers. After receiving numerous diverse and high-quality applications, four finalists for the Young Alumnus of the Year Award and three finalists for the International Alumnus of the Year Award were selected. The winners of these two awards will be announced and honoured with the winner of the 2009 Alumnus of the Year Award at this year's Courting the Greats Lunch at Customs House on Thursday, November 26. UQ inspires bright futures
From Sunday, November 29, until Thursday, December 3, 2009, UQ will welcome 270 Young Scholars from approximately 110 high schools around Queensland to the St Lucia campus for a four-day residential experience. The camp, hosted by UQ's Office of Prospective Students & Scholarships, is designed to nurture and develop exceptional Year 11 students and provide them with a unique opportunity for extension and enrichment. The Young Scholars will be housed at Union College for the week and be supervised by student mentors during their time at UQ. During the camp, students will participate in a variety of seminars, workshops and activities designed to give them a taste of UQ and introduce them to a wide range of study areas. Details: online.
Strategic Indigenous awareness workshops
Professional facilitator Grant Sarra will conduct his thought-provoking workshops encouraging participants to hypothetically walk in the shoes of Indigenous Australians on Monday and Tuesday, November 2 and 3, at the Ipswich and St Lucia campuses. National Science Week 2010
The Australian Government has announced $500,000 worth of funding in 2010 for organisations and individuals wanting to host a science event or activity in celebration of National Science Week (August 14-22) next year. Applications for the grants closes Friday, October 23. Details: online.

The Asperger's Syndrome Network@UQ
This network is for students, staff members and people in general affected by Asperger's Syndrome. The group meets once a week at the St Lucia campus of The University of Queensland. The group aims to provide an informal setting allowing for a supportive and inclusive environment for people to meet and make friends across UQ campuses. Meetings are held at 1.30pm each Friday afternoon at Student Services. Details: ext. 51723.
H1N1 flu vaccine
The UQ Pandemic Influenza Vaccination Program began on Tuesday, October 20, for all full-time and part-time staff members. Vaccinations at the clinics will be offered to staff but not students and are available at St Lucia, JKMRC and Dental School locations only. Could all managers or supervisors please ensure that all full-time or part-time staff, especially those staff members who may not have access to the UQ email or web system, are informed about this program. The program at St Lucia campus will be held at various locations as listed in the booking system available at the link below. Staff members who are located at Gatton campus, please telephone ext. 50396 or Ipswich campus on ext. 11210 for your local Health Service. Vaccinations will be offered at JKMRC and the Dental School on Tuesday, November 10. Details: online.

Biological Sciences Seminar Series
Dr Eric Treml from the School of Biological Sciences will describe the development of a dispersal model and illustrate how the connectivity networks can be analysed using a graph-theoretic approach. Dr Treml will highlight methods for integrating the spatial structure of marine population connectivity into regional conservation planning. The seminar will be held from 1pm on Friday, October 30, in room 139 of the Goddard building.

9th ANZALS Biennial Conference
The Australian and New Zealand Association of Leisure Studies (ANZALS), in association with UQ's School of Tourism, is pleased to present the 9th ANZALS Biennial Conference: "Exploring New Ideas and New Directions" to be held at the Hilton Hotel, Brisbane, from February 2-4, next year. The conference theme acknowledges the myriad issues and challenges that have significantly impacted on the form and structure of leisure programs throughout Australia and New Zealand in recent years. Global biosecurity conference
"Global Biosecurity 2010: safeguarding agriculture and the environment" will provide governments, agricultural industries and environmental organisations with an opportunity to come together to discuss and explore best-practice scientific and regulatory strategies to tackle pre-border, border and post-border risks.
