Teaching and Learning Week fast approaching
The University's annual celebration of teaching and learning in all forms, from the physical space of a classroom to innovative teaching methods, will be celebrated between Monday, November 2, and Friday, November 6. Check out the special website for details on the many activities such as seminars and workshops on offer including:
- Developing leadership: Drs Fiona Rohde and Polly Parker will present a session entitled "Developing Leadership" examining the UQ Business School's integration of leadership development in its formal programs - including the MBA - and executive education. A free afternoon tea will also be provided at the conclusion of the event. The session will be held from 2pm-3.30pm on Monday, November 2, in room 208, General Purpose North Building (39A), St Lucia campus. Details: online.
UQ snaps up three national teaching awards
UQ has maintained its position for having Australia's best teachers, adding three more national teaching awards to its portfolio. UQ has received one Award for Programs that Enhance Learning and two Awards for Teaching Excellence from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council. UQ came joint second overall in numbers of awards out of the winning 12 teams and 24 individuals from 18 universities in this latest round. Read the full story online.
2009 Young and International Alumnus of the Year Awards
The Young and International Alumnus of the Year Awards recognise and honour the achievements of outstanding UQ graduates who have achieved distinction in their chosen field and an outstanding reputation among their peers. After receiving numerous diverse and high-quality applications, four finalists for the Young Alumnus of the Year Award and three finalists for the International Alumnus of the Year Award were selected. The winners of these two awards will be announced and honoured with the winner of the 2009 Alumnus of the Year Award, at this year’s Courting the Greats Lunch at Customs House on November 26. UQ inspires bright futures
From Sunday, November 29, until Thursday, December 3, 2009, UQ will welcome 270 Young Scholars from approximately 110 high schools around Queensland to the St Lucia campus for a four-day residential experience. The camp, hosted by UQ's Office of Prospective Students & Scholarships, is designed to nurture and develop exceptional Year 11 students and provide them with a unique opportunity for extension and enrichment. The Young Scholars will be housed at Union College for the week and be supervised by student mentors during their time at UQ. During the camp, students will participate in a variety of seminars, workshops and activities designed to give them a taste of UQ and introduce them to a wide range of study areas. Details: online.
Strategic Indigenous awareness workshops
Professional facilitator Grant Sarra will conduct his thought-provoking workshops encouraging participants to hypothetically walk in the shoes of Indigenous Australians on Monday and Tuesday, November 2 and 3, at the Ipswich and St Lucia campuses. How white is your University?
UQ's School of Political Science and International Studies will host a forum from 10am-noon on Friday, October 23, exploring the difficult work of unpicking the deeply colonial relationships that permeate our universities amid calls to recognise, embed, and advance indigenous knowledge in higher education teaching and research. A panel of invited guests will deliver short presentations, followed by an open forum and then discussions over tea and coffee. Raising funds for Nepal
The Nepal Australia Friendship Association (NAFA) will have an information and fundraising stall on market day, Wednesday, October 21, to raise funds for development projects in Nepal such as health clinics, schools in remote villages, child sponsorship programs, an annual remote cataract surgery eye clinic, support for two childcare centres for poor children in Pokhara, an income-generation (goat) project, as well as one-off assistance for a range of water infrastructure projects in remote villages. Come and talk to the NAFA volunteers and take a look at our Nepalese jewellery, cards and craft items for sale.
Frazer to feature in ABC TV documentary
Watch out for Professor Ian Frazer from UQ's Diamantina Institute who will feature in a documentary entitled Catching Cancer to be screened on ABC 1 at 8.30pm on Thursday, October 22.
UQSOPA Conference
Registrations for the annual UQSOPA conference: "The Professional You" have now closed. Thank you to everyone who has registered to date. The conference will take place from 8.30am 4.30pm on Thursday, October 29, in the QBI Auditorium.
National Science Week 2010
The Australian Government has announced $500,000 worth of funding in 2010 for organisations and individuals wanting to host a science event or activity in celebration of National Science Week (August 14-22) next year. Applications for the grants closes Friday, October 23. Details: online.
The Asperger's Syndrome Network@UQ
This network is for students, staff members and people in general affected by Asperger's Syndrome. The group meets once a week at the St Lucia campus of The University of Queensland. The group aims to provide an informal setting allowing for a supportive and inclusive environment for people to meet and make friends across UQ campuses. Meetings are held at 1.30pm each Friday afternoon at Student Services. Details: ext. 51723.

Public lecture on the promotion of intangible heritage
Professor Amareswar Galla (from UQ's School of English, Media Studies & Art History), ICOM and UNESCO representative, presented a public lecture at the National Museum of Afghanistan in early October discussing Afghanistan's recent ratification of the Intangible Heritage Convention of 2003. Along with museum staff, Mr Massoudi and UNESCO officials from around the world attended. Focusing on the intersection between culture and development for almost three decades in the Asia Pacific, Professor Galla is currently Chair of the Cross Cultural Task Force (ICOM, Paris), Convenor for the Pacific Asia Observatory for Cultural Diversity in Human Development (UNESCO) and Editor-in-Chief for the International Journal of Intangible Heritage.

Voting open for general staff members of UQ Senate
UQ is governed by a 22-member Senate. Voting is now open for the general staff nominees standing for election for a four-year term from 2010 to 2013. Access a ballot form and cast your vote online. Voting closes at 9am on Thursday, October 22. Information about Senate, including elections, is available online. Elections for members of the Senate of The University of Queensland for 2010-2013 will be held in accordance with The University of Queensland Act and University Statute No. 1. Details: ext. 53360.
Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Internationalisation
Nominations are now open for the Organisational Unit and Staff categories of the above awards to be presented during Teaching and Learning Week. A third award, Exchange Partner of the Year, will be presented to one of the University's exchange partners on the recommendation of the Director, Office of Undergraduate Education. 2009 Prime Minister's Prize for Australian History
There's just a few weeks left to apply for this award. Nominations are sought from an individual or a group for any work first published, produced or broadcast between January 1, 2008, and June 30, 2009. This may include a published book, documentary film, documentary for radio or television, CD-ROM, DVD, other form of multimedia or a series of these works. Apply online. Behind the scenes of beautiful Italian fashion
Valentino: The Last Emperor starts screening at the Schonell Theatre from Thursday, October 22, and follows legendary fashion designer Valentino Garavini in the wake of his exit in 2008 from the fashion label he founded in Rome more than 45 years ago. Produced and directed by Matt Tyrnauer, special correspondent for Vanity Fair magazine, the film is an intimate, engaging and very funny fly-on-the-wall exploration of the singular worlds of one of Italy's most famous men who says at one point in the film "I love beauty - it's not my fault". Just clowning around
The Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble (QSE) is UQ's resident theatre company. Artistic Director Rob Pensalfini is a Professor with UQ's School of English, Media Studies and Art History and stars as court clown, Touchstone, in an upcoming QSE performance of As You Like It. Performances of the play at The Amphitheatre, Roma Street Parklands, will be staged from October 22-25 and October 29-November 1. Evening shows from Thursday to Saturday will start at 7.30pm while matinees, on Saturday and Sunday, will start at 2pm.
