UQ Asia-Pacific natural disasters message

The University will provide support to students or staff affected by natural disasters in Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga.

UQ welcomes Confucius on campus

UQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Greenfield and Chairman of the Tianjin University Administrative Council Professor Liu Jianping signed the Confucius Institute Agreement on behalf of both universities at UQ last week.

Diamantina Institute Director awarded Honda Prize

Professor Ian Frazer has been awarded the 2009 Honda Prize for his contribution to the development of the world's first cervical cancer vaccines. Professor Frazer will donate the 10 million yen (approximately AU $125,000) prize money to UQ research.

ExxonMobil Award for distinguished chemical engineer

Professor Suresh Bhatia has won an ExxonMobil Award for distinguished contributions to chemical engineering. A Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, he holds the Herdillia Award for Excellence in Basic Research in Chemical Engineering and the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Engineering Sciences bestowed by the Government of India, its highest scientific award. In 2007 his nanoporous materials research was recognised with the Micromeritics Instrument Grant Award.

Free public lecture examines discrimination against people with blindness

The Mythology of Discrimination will be discussed at a free UQ public lecture on Friday, October 16 at the St Lucia campus. The President of the National Federation of the Blind, USA, Dr Marc Maurer, will be guest speaker at the lecture from 4pm-5pm in Lecture Theatre 234, Parnell Building, Great Court. The lecture is part of the UQ Equity Office Diversity Discussion series. Light refreshments to follow. RSVP to equity@uq.edu.au by Wednesday, October 14.

Frazer to feature in ABC TV documentary

Watch out for Professor Ian Frazer from UQ's Diamnatina Institute who will feature in a documentary entitled Catching Cancer to be screened on ABC 1 at 8.30pm on Thursday, October 22.

Mental Health Week

As part of Mental Health Week (October 4-10), UQ Student Day will be held at the Ipswich campus on Tuesday, October 6 from 11.30am-1.30pm in the courtyard (between buildings 8 and 12). Includes a free BBQ, fruit and popcorn; free 10 minute neck and shoulder massages; stalls and giveaways; circle dancing; quizzes and prizes. Mental Health Week UQ Student Day is a joint collaboration between Student Services, UQ Health Service, UQ Union, UQ Sport and UQ Library.

H1N1 flu vaccine

Maurie McNarn, Executive Director (Operations) has approved a Panvax H1N1 vaccine program for staff. Information about the vaccine is available online. To assist in planning, if you are interested in having a vaccination, send an email to flu@uq.edu.au. In the subject line enter the campus. Do not put any information in the email as the numbers of emails at each campus will be counted rather than read.

Three double Gold Class movie passes up for grabs

For a chance to win one of three double-pass gold class movie vouchers, enter the P&F Survey Competition. As part of its commitment to improve the provision of services to its customers, P&F is seeking input via a survey competition, on whether its services meet with customer requirements, and also on the level of satisfaction. The competition closes Sunday, October 18. Access further details and the survey online.

2009 MIS User Prize and User Forum

The 2009 MIS User Forum will be held on Friday, November 20. A preview of the agenda is available on the MIS website. Click here to register. UQU Functions changes name

UQU Functions has had a name change and is now called Schonell Weddings & Events. It still offers the same high quality standards of service and food, and continues to provide catering pick-up and delivery. All menus and contact details are on its new website.

UQ Union carpark closed

The top section of the Union carpark at St Lucia will be closed from Tuesday, October 6 – Thursday, October 8 due to Oktoberfest. There will be limited spaces for parking.

Textbook submissions for summer semester

October 15 is the closing date for textbook submissions for Summer Semester, 2009 to the Co-op Bookshop, St Lucia (if unable to make a firm submission before this date, notify Meegan Smith ASAP. One entry is required for each course code. If teaching in Summer Semester, visit www.coop-bookshop.com.au, following the prompts through "Lecturers" to "Enter Text List". Free lunchtime Organ & Chamber Music Recital

The Rev. Dr Howard Munro (Dean, St John's College), Kerrie-Anne Looi and Kathleen Lill will perform on Tuesday, October 13 from 12.30pm-1.30pm at the University Art Museum, St Lucia. The concert will showcase the Baroque era with organ, instrumental and choral music. Instrumentalists will include the St John's College String Quartet. The St John's College Choral Scholars will sing anthems. Details online.

Oktoberfest on October 7

The 2nd Degree Bar & Grill at St Lucia will present Oktoberfest this week. This year’s festivities will see the Union carpark transformed complete with steins, food and entertainment including special guests, The Spacifix, Capitol Groove and Mark Lowndes. Details: online. No cover charge.

Win the jackpot at Club quiz

The University of Queensland Club's monthly quiz continues on Thursday, October 8 at St Lucia at 6pm for a 6.30pm start for teams of up to six players. Adolescent alcohol harm prevention

Parents of teenagers aged 14-16 are invited to participate in Project SHIELD, a parenting program aimed at empowering parents to prevent adolescent alcohol-related harm. The program is free, practical, and involves a 90-minute home visit with a registered psychologist. This project is not designed for parents/families with existing drug/alcohol/legal concerns.
