Make every day Earth Hour

Earth Hour in March this year achieved an energy saving of 6.5 percent. With the University’s annual energy costs estimated to reach $11 million next year, UQ staff are encouraged to be energy-efficient at work. If we saved 6.5 percent of our annual energy usage every day, the financial and environmental saving would be $715,000 and 7954 tonnes greenhouse gas emissions annually. The environmental impact is equivalent to switching off 644 houses for one year. Designate someone in your area to switch off lights at the end of the day. Remember to turn off air-conditioners, computers and monitors, lights in corridors, meeting rooms, bathrooms, etc. Also, keep doors and windows closed in air-conditioned spaces and use natural light wherever possible provided OH&S is not impacted. View more energy saving hints online.

Maid who painted from the “Sacred Heart”

Séraphine, a new film at the Schonell Cinema, depicts the true story of Séraphine Louis aka Séraphine de Senlis (played by Yolande Moreau), a simple and profoundly devout housekeeper who in 1905 at age 41, self-taught and with the instigation of her guardian angel, began painting brilliantly colourful canvases. In 1912, Wilhelm Uhde, a German art critic and collector – he was one of the first collectors of Picasso and champion of naïve primitive painter Le Douanier Rousseau – discovered her paintings while she worked for him as a maid in his house in Senlis outside Paris. A moving and unexpected relationship develops between the avant-garde art dealer and the visionary cleaning lady leading to Séraphine’s work being grouped with other naïve painters – the so-called “Sacred Heart Painters”. The beautifully shot film recently won Best Picture and Best Actress for Yolande Moreau along with five other awards at the Cesars – the French Academy Awards. Details: online.
