UQ has been ranked number one this quarter for customer service by Customer Service Benchmarking Australia (CSBA) based on calls to the University’s main number of 3365 1111. Test queries ranged from student life to enrolment. CSBA benchmark nationally across multiple industries and the result is a feather in the cap for UQ’s voice operations team.

- Research Week 2009 next week
The University will celebrate outstanding research during Research Week from September 21 to 25, 2009. Research Week raises awareness about UQ research among current and prospective students, staff, graduates, schools, industry, government, media and the wider community. Details: online.

Preventing child abuse and neglect
UQ staff and students are invited to complete a confidential national online survey as part of the recently endorsed “Protecting Australia’s Children is Everyone’s Business, National Framework for Protecting Australia’s Children 2009–2020”. The survey is the centrepiece of a NAPCAN-run innovative community engagement campaign launched on Sunday, September 6, and concluding on Sunday, November 1. Education Professor is Routledge Education’s Author of the Month
Internationally recognised education expert Professor Bob Lingard has been recognised as Routledge Education’s Author of the Month. A new initiative, the Author of the Month celebrates a recognised author and their academic and professional career and helps promote their range of books. Professor Lingard’s latest book, Globalizing Education Policy, co-written with Fazal Rizvi was published by Routlege in August this year. He is currently working on two further Routledge books, Changing Schools: Making a world of a difference, and Bourdieu and the Field of Education Policy – both of which are due to be published in 2010. Part-time Multi-Level permits
UQ Traffic & Parking is now able to offer staff part-time Multi-Level (Guaranteed) permits that may be configured for one, two, three or four days per week. The fee will be 20 percent, 40 percent, 60 percent or 80 percent of the full-time guaranteed permit fee. Payment may be made upfront or through payroll deduction (by which staff members would take advantage of the salary sacrifice arrangement). Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra musicians are donating their time to perform two concerts on Friday and Saturday, September 18 and 19, from 7.30pm at All Hallows School in the Valley. All proceeds will be donated to medical research. The orchestra is led by world-renowned conductor Andrew Robinson and the program will feature well-loved classics from composers including Dvorak, Wagner, Ravel, Marquez, Liadov, Grainger and Tchaikovsky. UQ travel survey (win gold class movie tickets)
The University of Queensland is determining its greenhouse gas emissions inventory. A significant source of emissions is associated transport. This survey gathers data about how student and staff travel to UQ St Lucia and the distance travelled. The data will be used to estimate transport emissions. Participate in the survey online.
Students’ UQ experience
Every two years UQ asks first- and later-year students to comment on their UQ experiences. This year UQ is using the Australasian Survey of Student Engagement for this purpose. Participation is online. Previous surveys have brought about changes in the University such as the emphasis on first-year experience, the development of collaborative teaching and learning spaces and increases in IT access in libraries. Biological Sciences postdoc awarded Qld International Fellowship
Dr Eve McDonald-Madden from The Ecology Centre in the School of Biological Sciences has been awarded a Queensland International Fellowship in order to strengthen the State’s global knowledge alliances. The fellowship enables Queenslanders to undertake collaborative scientific research at leading international institutions. Dr McDonald-Madden will use her award to travel to the National Centre for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis in Santa Barbara, which is ranked in the top one percent of institutions world-wide working in ecology and the environment and supports cross-disciplinary research that uses existing data to address major fundamental issues in ecology and allied fields, as well as its application to management and policy.
General Staff Self Development Prize
The School of Medicine’s Dr Paul Masci was recently awarded the General Staff Self Development Prize. Administered through the Scholarships and Prizes Office, the prize is open to members of the general staff who have been employed at the University for at least three years. This prize is awarded to the staff member who demonstrates the most outstanding achievements in self-development whether of an academic or non-academic nature. Dr Masci has been employed at UQ for 38 years and during this time has completed a BSc, MSc and PhD. He is also the principal inventor on four intellectual properties (IP) belonging to UQ – three of which have been licensed to a spinoff company.
Seminar on bringing the benefit of research to the world
The Queensland Fellows of the Australian Academy of Science and the ATSE Queensland Division will host a public seminar and cocktail party at which Professor Robert Parton will discuss “From disease to drug delivery: membrane microdomain formation in bacteria, fish, and man” and Dr Cherrell Hirst will discuss “Bringing the benefit of a research discovery or idea to the world”. International Day of Peace Fair 2009
A mix of cultural, community and humanitarian events celebrating the theme of “helping others across the globe” will be held from 9.30am–3.30pm on Sunday, September 20, at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Mt Coot-tha, Toowong. Organised by the International Day of Peace Alliance, the event commemorates the UN’s International Day of Peace (September 21 each year). ARC Linkage Projects Scheme demystified
Professor Ian Mackinnon, former Executive Director of the ARC, whose responsibilities included the ARC Linkage Projects Scheme, will address a special seminar for UQ researchers on the ARC Linkage Projects scheme. Also presenting will be Professor Zhiguo Yuan, professor in environmental engineering and Deputy Director of the Advanced Water Management Centre at UQ. He will focus on strategic and management issues involving large multi-party research-industry linkages. Boxing clever
TYSON, a new film being shown at the Schonell Cinema is acclaimed indie director James Toback’s stylistically inventive portrait of a mesmerising Mike Tyson. Toback allows Tyson to reveal himself without inhibition and with eloquence and a pervasive vulnerability. Through a mixture of original interviews and archival footage and photographs, a startlingly complex human being emerges. The film ranges from Tyson’s earliest memories of growing up on the mean streets of Brooklyn through his entry into the world of boxing, to his rollercoaster ride in the funhouse of worldwide fame and fortunes won and lost. The Wellers Hill State School Choir to visit UQ
On Wednesday, September 16, the Wellers Hill State School choir will visit the School of Music to perform for students and staff. Under the direction of music teacher Petrina Lewis, the choir will present a varied repertoire. Tertiary music education students will have the opportunity to collaborate with primary school students. School of Pharmacy seminar series

Sadie Philcox Memorial Lecture
Each year, the Division of Occupational Therapy in conjunction with the OT Student Association holds the Sadie Philcox Memorial Lecture where an invited guest presents their topic of expertise. Preparing for disasters: one doctor’s experience
As part of UQ’s School of Medicine Head of School Lecture Series, Dr Richard Deichmann MD will deliver a lecture entitled “Disaster Preparedness: Lessons from Katrina”. Dr Deichmann was Chief of Medicine at the Memorial Medical Center, New Orleans, when Hurricane Katrina hit the region. In his lecture, he will recount the daily ordeal the more than 2000 evacuees faced. The lecture will be held from 5.30pm (6pm start) until 7pm on Wednesday, September 16 in the ES Meyers Room, Herston campus. Historians must toughen up
Highly regarded Australian historians such as Henry Reynolds, Stuart Macintyre and Lyndall Ryan have attracted scorn, derision and ad hominem attacks in mainstream media outlets, and vicious personal abuse on blogs run by such luminaries as Andrew Bolt and Tim Blair. The temptation is to leave academic history and public memory to operate in distinct and separate spheres. UQ senior lecturer in Australian History, Martin Crotty, will urge historians to “gird their loins, toughen up, and enter the public fray when the opportunity arises” at this Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies seminar from 5.30pm–6.30pm on Thursday, September 24, at the UQ Art Museum. Specialist Aged Care Conference
The Geriatric and Rehabilitation Unit (Princess Alexandra Hospital) and the Academic Unit in Geriatric Medicine (UQ) are proud to announce their bi-annual specialist aged care conference “Geriatrics Beyond the Boundaries 2009: e-Health and Technology in Aged Care”. This one-day conference brings together experts in geriatric care from across Queensland and interstate and is expected to host up to 200 delegates from the public and private health sectors. New Directions in Leukaemia Research Conference 2010
