Research Week 2009 fast approaching

The University will celebrate outstanding research during Research Week from September 21 to 25, 2009. Research Week raises awareness about UQ research among current and prospective students, staff, graduates, schools, industry, government, media and the wider community. Details: online.

ARC Linkage Projects Scheme demystified

Professor Ian Mackinnon, former Executive Director of the ARC, whose responsibilities included the ARC Linkage Projects Scheme, will address a special seminar for UQ researchers on the ARC Linkage Projects scheme. Also presenting will be Professor Zhiguo Yuan, professor in environmental engineering and Deputy Director of the Advanced Water Management Centre at UQ. He will focus on strategic and management issues involving large multi-party research-industry linkages. UQ presents literary feast for Brisbane Writers Festival

A free public lecture by Australian literary legend Thomas Keneally headlines a page-turning program of UQ events at this year's Brisbane Writers Festival. The University is again a major sponsor of the festival, and is presenting a range of sessions exploring issues ranging from the global financial meltdown to saving the world's rainforests and reviving dying languages. Share your student experience of UQ

Every two years UQ asks first- and later-year students to comment on their UQ experiences. This year UQ is using the Australasian Survey of Student Engagement for this purpose. Previous surveys have brought about changes in the University such as the emphasis on first year experience, the development of collaborative teaching and learning spaces and increases in IT access in libraries. Have a look at your email to see whether you are eligible to participate and have your say about your UQ experience. Details: ext. 56731.

The Wellers Hill State School Choir to visit UQ

On Wednesday, September 16, the Wellers Hill State School choir will visit the School of Music to perform for students and staff. Under the direction of music teacher Petrina Lewis, the choir will present a varied repertoire. Tertiary music education students will have the opportunity to collaborate with primary school students. The concert will be held from 3.00–3.50pm in room 460 (level four) of the Zelman Cowen Building. Everyone welcome to this free concert. Details: s.garvis@uq.edu.au.

2009 Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History

Nominations are open for the 2009 Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History which comprises an embossed gold medallion and a tax-free grant of $100,000. Nominations are sought from an individual or a group for any work first published, produced or broadcast between January 1, 2008, and June 30, 2009. 2009 nomination guidelines and applications forms are available online. The Queensland node of the ARC/NHMRC Research Network in Ageing Well (based at the UQ/Blue Care Research Unit at Toowong) is holding events targeted at professionals working in areas related to ageing, baby boomers and seniors themselves including a cocktail party and a symposium covering areas such as financial management, grandparenting, exercise and travel tips. Free family day at the UQ Aquatic Centre

The UQ Aquatic Centre Open Day from 10am–2pm on Sunday, September 13, wil feature a host of entertainment including free entry to the pool, jumping castle, mechanised surfboard, two giant pool inflatables, live music, face-painting and a special guest appearance by Olympic swimmer Bronte Barratt. Enrolments open for UQKids Spring Holiday Program

UQKids offers a range of sports and activities for all children to enjoy, including Recreation Activities Program (RAP) for six-12-year-olds to participate in a range of indoor and outdoor activities which focus around creative play. There’s also netball, rugby, rowing camp, athletics and tennis during the upcoming school holiday period from Monday, September 21, until Friday, October 2. Learn skills which could save someone’s life

UQ Sport in conjunction with PulseStart Training Solutions provides nationally accredited First Aid and CPR courses on the St Lucia campus. Courses run fortnightly and prices start from $60. Lectures, seminars & workshops

School of Pharmacy seminar series

Weekly seminars are run throughout the academic year for all interested attendees including academics, RHD candidates, researchers and any other UQ staff members. The 45-minute lectures are held from 1pm–1.45pm each Wednesday in room 204 in the Mansergh Shaw Building (building no. 45) on the St Lucia campus. Details: online.

Recent findings on Alzheimer’s disease presented

Team Leader of Biomedical Imaging at the Australia E-health Research Centre, CSIRO, Olivier Salvado, will present a lecture entitled “Computing neuroimaging biomarkers for clinical studies: Recent findings on Alzheimer’s disease from the AIBL study”. The seminar will be held from 4.30pm on Thursday, September 10, in the Main Auditorium, Level 2, UQ Centre for Clinical Research, RBWH Campus. Their own right time: A tale of two clocks

The next Tools of Science seminar from 6pm–7pm on Tuesday, September 15, will be presented by aeronautical engineer of 45 years’ standing Alan Emmerson, and concerns a fascinating tale of two eminent English scientists who each set out to build the clock of his dreams. The timepieces turned out to be as different as chalk and cheese with one so precise that its rate was influenced by a chestnut tree growing nearby and the position of one of the chairs in the clock room. Aficionados will know these clocks as “the Littlemore” and “W5”. The seminar will be held in room 234, Parnell Building (number 7). Details: online.

Sadie Philcox Memorial Lecture

Each year, the Division of Occupational Therapy in conjunction with the OT Student Association holds the Sadie Philcox Memorial Lecture where an invited guest presents their topic of expertise. All interested parties are invited to attend this year’s lecture which will be held at 6pm on Wednesday, September 16, in room 101 in the Seddon Building 82D, and presented by Professor Leeanne Carey, founding head of the Division of Neurorehabilitation and Recovery, National Stroke Research Institute and Adjunct Professor School of Occupational Therapy, LaTrobe University. Preparing for disasters: one doctor’s experience

As part of UQ’s School of Medicine Head of School Lecture Series, Dr Richard Deichmann MD will deliver a lecture entitled “Disaster Preparedness: Lessons from Katrina”. Dr Deichmann was Chief of Medicine at the Memorial Medical Center, New Orleans, when Hurricane Katrina hit the region. In his lecture, he will recount the daily ordeal the more than 2000 evacuees faced. The lecture will be held from 5.30pm (6pm start) until 7pm on Wednesday, September 16 in the ES Meyers Room, Herston campus. The School of Education Postgraduate Research Conference will be held from 8.45am–4pm on Saturday, September 19, in the UQ School of Education, Lecture Room S402 Social Sciences Building (24) Campbell Street. Professor Jo-Anne Reid from the Charles Sturt University, Faculty of Education, will deliver the keynote speech on the topic: “Engaging research: Profession, practice, politics”. Specialist Aged Care Conference

The Geriatric and Rehabilitation Unit (Princess Alexandra Hospital) and the Academic Unit in Geriatric Medicine (UQ) are proud to announce their bi-annual specialist aged care conference “Geriatrics Beyond the Boundaries 2009: e-Health and Technology in Aged Care”. This one-day conference brings together experts in geriatric care from across Queensland and interstate and is expected to host up to 200 delegates from the public and private health sectors. New Directions in Leukaemia Research Conference 2010

Save the date for March 28–31, 2010, for the New Directions in Leukaemia Research Conference to be held on the Sunshine Coast. This conference aims to bring together scientists and clinicians to discuss and debate current concepts in our understanding of the molecular basis of leukaemia, emerging paradigms, breakthroughs at the forefronts of leukaemia research and new therapies emerging in the clinic.
