The latest

UQ signs Talloires Declaration

As part of UQ’s commitment to environmental sustainability, UQ is one of about 400 universities internationally to become a signatory to the Talloires Declaration. This is a 10-point action plan for incorporating sustainability and environmental literacy in teaching, research, operations and outreach at colleges and universities.

Getting them and keeping them

UQ staff are invited to a symposium on access and retention of low SES students at 9am–1.30pm on Tuesday, October 20, in the Riverview Room, Emmanuel College. Program and details: online. RSVP: equity@uq.edu.au.

iTunes U is coming to UQ

UQ is planning to create a presence on iTunes U, a portal offered by Apple that provides a way to access the University’s electronic media such as podcasts, lecture recordings, and PDFs for offline viewing. Digital content from across UQ can be managed and aggregated using iTunes U, and delivered to students in a flexible way. The iTunes U at UQ project team would like to hear your feedback on how you might use the product via an online survey. Details: online.

  • UQ Centenary merchandise: share your thoughts:
    As part of the UQ Centenary celebrations in 2010, it is anticipated that mementos and souvenirs will be available for students, staff, alumni and visitors to purchase. We want to know what sort of merchandise, if any, you would or wouldn’t consider buying. Take the online survey now.
  • Call for Centenary performers and participants:
    From MCs to jugglers, and rock stars to thespians, the UQ Centenary Secretariat wants to hear from you! We’re looking for performers of all types to take part in the UQ Centenary Celebration Day on April 18, 2010. Leading defence analyst to deliver public lecture

Former senior advisor to former Defence Minister Kim Beazley and Prime Minister Bob Hawke, Hugh White, will deliver his views on the Defence White Paper when he visits UQ on Wednesday, August 26. Entitled “Defence Policy and the Power of the States: ‘New’ and ‘Old’ Security Paradigms in the 2009 Defence White Paper”, the lecture is hosted by The School of Political Science and International Studies as part of their Conflict and Research Group Seminar Series. TEDI on the move

The Teaching and Educational Development Institute (TEDI) is on the move, from building 15 to buildings 90 and 96 (corner of Hood and Rock streets), St Lucia campus, this week. TEDI plans to reopen at the new location on Monday, August 31, and Staff Development seminars will resume in the seminar room (room 215, building 90) on Monday, September 7. Normal communications will be interrupted while TEDI staff change offices, but staff will be checking emails as often as possible.

UQ academic steps up to the plate

Associate Professor Ray Collins, from UQ’s School of Integrative Systems, has been appointed to chair a $35 million program to boost Australia’s regional food and seafood industries. The four-year Regional Food Producers Innovation and Productivity Program (RFPIPP) encourages food and seafood businesses to apply for projects that focus on innovation and technology improvements. Librarians waiting to pick your brain

The input and perspective of researchers and teachers is being sought in a survey commissioned by the Librarians of the Group of Eight Universities. Conducted by Outsell Inc (UK), the survey is part of a cost–benefit study aimed at assessing the value for academic communities of the information resources made available to them by their universities. Teachers, researchers and RHD students will receive an email invitation to respond this week. Please take the time (about 10 minutes) to respond and contribute to the future of information provision for research at Go8 universities. Details: via email or ext. 58281.

Eureka moment for UQ team

The Australian Museum Eureka Prizes are the most prestigious awards in Australian science. UQ Ecology Centre’s Professor Hugh Possingham and Matt Watts and former UQ PhD student Dr Ian Ball (the Marxan Development Team) were awarded the Sherman Eureka Prize for Environmental Research at a star-studded formal dinner in Sydney last week. Marxan, a conservation planning tool, is accessed by people in more than 90 countries and can be downloaded for free from the website. Eureka Prize details: online.

2009 Miracle Workers Awards cocktail function

Staff are invited to attend the above event at 5.30pm on Monday, September 7, at the UQ Club. The cost of $20 per person includes beverages and canapés. Miracle Workers will be presented with their awards by UQ Chancellor, Mr John Story. Heron Island Early Career Grant Scheme

Heron Island Research Station is pleased to announce the creation of an Early Career Grant Scheme (ECGS) for UQ academics and research academics (levels A and B). This scheme offers an accommodation and bench-fee waiver to UQ-appointed academic staff in the early stages of their careers working in a field which complements or enhances HIRS’s reputation as a world-class research station. UQ Ally trainers needed

The UQ Ally program raises visibility about issues impacting students and staff identifying as same-sex attracted or differently gendered, ensuring they feel safe and valued at UQ. The Equity Office is calling for expressions of interest from staff who would like to assist in delivering UQ Ally training. Staff do not have to identify as LGBT/I to undertake this role, although those who identify as such are particularly encouraged to consider assisting with this important program. Information about the UQ Ally program is available online. An initial “train the trainer” session will take place from 9am–11am, on Wednesday, September 2, in room 816, building 69 (level 8 of the old Computer Science Building). Our Women, Our State Awards 2009

The Our Women, Our State Awards 2009 will recognise the achievements of Queensland girls and women in building brighter futures for other females in Queensland’s science, engineering and technology industries. UQ is sponsoring the awards through the offices of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and the Graduate School and encourages nominations from students, colleagues and associates. Individuals and teams may enter, or you may nominate another person with their prior permission. Entries must be received by the Office for Women by 5pm on Friday, September 11, 2009. 2009 Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History

Nominations are open for the 2009 Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History which comprises an embossed gold medallion and a tax-free grant of $100,000. Nominations are sought from an individual or a group for any work first published, produced or broadcast between January 1, 2008, and June 30, 2009. 2009 nomination guidelines and applications forms are available online. Textbook submissions for Summer Semester

The Co-op Bookshop St Lucia is now accepting textbook submissions for Summer Semester, 2009, (and for Semester 1, 2010, should you be certain that neither staffing nor the books used are going to change in the interim). One entry for each course code please (a full search will be made for new text editions should that be relevant). If you are teaching a subject/s in Summer Semester, could you please visit the Bookshop website, and follow the prompts through “Lecturers” to “Enter Text List”. School of Pharmacy seminar series

Weekly seminars are run throughout the academic year for all interested attendees including academics, RHD candidates, researchers and any other UQ staff members. Three minutes to get the gist of University research

When UQ PhD student Mike Imelfort explains his research in the complicated field of DNA to friends at a party, he can do so in very few words. What helped him to cut the jargon was his involvement and subsequent win last year in a UQ competition called the “Three Minute Thesis Competition”. The competition aims to help students explain their studies in a succinct and compelling way so an average audience without technical skills can understand. Volunteers needed for Timor research

The Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies (ACPACS) is involved in various research projects in the Asia-Pacific region. One of its current projects deals with issues of reconciliation, justice and peace-building in Timor–Leste. In this regard, ACPACS is looking for students or non-students with a knowledge of Tetum and Portuguese willing to spend three months doing volunteer work related to this research at the centre. Housekeeping matters

UQ computers further safeguarded

The University’s computers will have better anti-virus protection in coming weeks following an agreement with software provider, Sophos. The Sophos Endpoint Security anti-virus software will be rolled out automatically so the only changes staff and students should notice will be a different anti-virus icon on desktops and more frequent updates. The agreement also allows staff and students to have a free copy on their home computers, which will be available soon. Details: online.

Arranged marriage blow-out in beautiful Paris

Chéri, now showing at the Schonell Cinemas, is directed by Stephen Frears and stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Kathy Bates, and Rupert Friend. Set in the luxurious demi-monde of pre-World War I Paris, it follows the story of a love affair between a beautiful retired courtesan Léa (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Chéri (Rupert Friend), the son of her old colleague and rival, Mme Peloux (Kathy Bates). Léa has educated the spoilt and callow boy in the ways of love, but after six years, Mme Peloux has secretly arranged a marriage between Chéri and Edmée (Felicity Jones), daughter of another rich courtesan, Marie Laure (Iben Hjejle).

“Atmospheric” tour of exhibition

Join curator Steven Alderton on a free guided tour of the exhibition “Ricky Swallow: Watercolours” from 11am–noon on Saturday, August 29. This is the first major exhibition of Ricky Swallow’s drawings and watercolours and features more than 80 works. Ricky describes paint as a “malleable medium” and watercolours as “atmospheric presentations”. “They dream of becoming paintings, but remain moored to the paper surface,” he says. Ricky won the Contempora 5 award in 1999, and has exhibited in America, Europe, New Zealand and Japan. He lives and works in Los Angeles. The exhibition continues until Sunday, September 27, 2009. Get your Chi in check

Introductory sessions in Tai Chi will be held from noon–1pm on Wednesday, August 26, in the UQ Centre (St Lucia campus) and from noon–1pm on Thursday, August 27, in the ES Meyers Lecture Theatre, School of Medicine (Herston campus). These workshops will offer participants an opportunity to experience energy flow to harmonize and benefit the body and mind in Tai Chi training. Digging the dirt on dinosaurs

Textual traditions, identity and media in Bali

In this free public lecture, Associate Professor Helen Creese, a Reader in Indonesian in the School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies, will explore the interdependence of media and literary practices as they are reconceptualised during a period of significant social and political transformation in contemporary Indonesia. Skerman Lecture explores sexual transmission of HIV

Director of the Westmead Millennium Institute for Medical Research at the Westmead Hospital and of the Centre for Virus Research Professor Tony Cunningham will present this year’s Skerman Lecture: “Understanding the mechanisms of sexual transmission of HIV: keys to prevention”. Specialist Aged Care Conference

The Geriatric and Rehabilitation Unit (Princess Alexandra Hospital) and the Academic Unit in Geriatric Medicine (UQ) are proud to announce their bi-annual specialist aged care conference “Geriatrics Beyond the Boundaries 2009: e-Health and Technology in Aged Care”. This one-day conference brings together experts in geriatric care from across Queensland and interstate and is expected to host up to 200 delegates from the public and private health sectors.
