UQ computers further safeguarded
The University’s computers will have better anti-virus protection in coming weeks following an agreement with software provider, Sophos. The Sophos Endpoint Security anti-virus software will be rolled out automatically so the only changes staff and students should notice will be a different anti-virus icon on desktops and more frequent updates. The agreement also allows staff and students to have a free copy on their home computers, which will be available soon. Details: online.

Three minutes to get the gist of University research
When UQ PhD student Mike Imelfort explains his research in the complicated field of DNA to friends at a party, he can do so in very few words. What helped him to cut the jargon was his involvement and subsequent win last year in a UQ competition called the “Three Minute Thesis Competition”. The competition aims to help students explain their studies in a succinct and compelling way so an average audience without technical skills can understand. Digging the dirt on dinosaurs
A free public lecture hosted by the Queensland Division of the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science (ANZAAS) entitled "Digging Dinosaurs – The Dinosaurs of West America: Life, Death, and Evolution" will be held at 6.30pm on Tuesday, August 25, at the Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology at 78 Bywong Street, Toowong. Contribute Magazine launch event
The United Nations Student Association is launching its second edition of Contribute Magazine. The magazine explores and engages in international issues by providing an informative and objective publication in which articles from the best undergraduate and postgraduate contributors are published. The launch event will be held at 7.30pm on Thursday, August 20, at 142 Boundary Street, West End. This edition’s theme, “whither humanity”, examines current world issues and provides insights into what the future may hold for humankind and the challenges it faces. Cost: members – free and non-members – $5 (includes free copy of Contribute Magazine and UNSA membership.
Volunteer needed for Timor research
The Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies (ACPACS) is involved in various research projects in the Asia-Pacific region. One of its current projects deals with issues of reconciliation, justice and peace-building in Timor–Leste. In this regard, ACPACS is looking for students or non-students with a knowledge of Tetum and Portuguese willing to spend three months doing volunteer work related to this research at the centre. Music students score places in prestigious competition
The School of Music congratulates Bachelor of Music pianists Dami Im and Oliver She for gaining places in the prestigious Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition, held in Brisbane this August. After a rigorous and arduous round of auditions involving pianists across Australia and New Zealand, Dami and Oliver will be competing against 20 other contestants. The school encourages the community to support them in the competition, held at the Queensland Conservatorium. Details: online.
All aboard for a Greek adventure
Greek cafes were once the social hubs of western Queensland towns and tomorrow, UQ PhD student Toni Risson will board the Q150 train to embark on a journey of multicultural discovery. The UQ-sponsored Q150 Steam Train departed Ipswich in April, undertaking a five-month journey to more than 30 Queensland communities. The heritage-listed steam train’s trip is part of a year-long celebration of Queensland's 150th anniversary of becoming a state. Read full story online.
Textual traditions, identity and media in Bali
In this free public lecture, Associate Professor Helen Creese, a Reader in Indonesian in the School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies, will explore the interdependence of media and literary practices as they are reconceptualised during a period of significant social and political transformation in contemporary Indonesia. Sites of Memory symposium
Memory studies, as an emerging cross-disciplinary field, sheds new light on how we interpret, manage and understand sites of significance. Presenters from the arts, sciences and humanities will examine the nature of human memory and how it affects our relationship with the landscape in Australia and overseas. The keynote speaker will be UQ’s Professor Amareswar Galla – a leading expert in museums, sustainable development and poverty alleviation through culture. The symposium will be held from 9am–4.30pm on Friday, August 28, in the Visions Theatre in the National Museum of Australia, Canberra. Cost: $80, $40 students (includes all catering). Specialist Aged Care Conference
The Geriatric and Rehabilitation Unit (Princess Alexandra Hospital) and the Academic Unit in Geriatric Medicine (UQ) are proud to announce their bi-annual specialist aged care conference “Geriatrics Beyond the Boundaries 2009: e-Health and Technology in Aged Care”. This one-day conference brings together experts in geriatric care from across Queensland and interstate and is expected to host up to 200 delegates from the public and private health sectors. Seniors Week
To celebrate Seniors Week (August 15–22), the UQ Inter-Professional Clinics will host a number of free morning events for everyone to enjoy. Bring along parents, grandparents or friends for a leisurely stroll along the Brisbane River at UQ St Lucia, followed by morning tea. Nominations are now open for 2009 Miracle Worker Awards. UQ staff are invited to nominate any UQ employee who has inspired his/her peers through qualities in the workplace such as exceptional communication, sharing of knowledge, providing leadership and willingness to go above and beyond expectations. 1960s comic strip – science fact or science fiction?
In this free public seminar, School of English, Media and Art History lecturer, Dr Maureen Burns, will discuss “Frontiers of Science”, a popular science comic strip published in The Sydney Morning Herald between 1961 and 1979, and syndicated to 200 newspapers around the world. What can it tell us about the relations between art and (popular) science in the 1960s? Facelift for Main Refectory
The Main Refectory is currently undergoing renovations but will still be serving drinks, sandwiches, hot meals and roasts Monday–Friday, between 7.30am–3pm. The mobile food van at the top of Campbell Place will be serving burgers, hot chips and snacks between 7.30am–5pm.
TEDI hits the road
The Teaching and Educational Development Institute (TEDI) is preparing to move from Building 15 to Buildings 90 and 96 (corner of Hood and Rock streets), St Lucia campus, on Monday, August 24. TEDI is heading to this temporary location while the “TEDI hut” is demolished to make way for construction of the new Learning Innovation Building. Staff development seminars at TEDI are scheduled to resume in the Seminar Room (room 215, Building 90, entrance from Rock Street) from Monday, September 7.

The UQ Musculoskeletal and Sports Injury Clinic can manage a wide variety of sporting injuries sustained by athletes of all levels. From August to October, a sports speciality clinic is offered in conjunction with the postgraduate sports physiotherapy program. Are you a parent who is feeling stressed?
A new parenting program is being offered for parents who are feeling pressure from the demands of parenthood. The program is run in small groups and is open to anyone caring for a child/or children aged between two and 10 years, who is feeling down, stressed or emotionally overwhelmed in the parenting role and can attend eight sessions at the university in St Lucia.
