Ups and downs of the getting of wisdom
It is widely believed that wisdom comes with age, but not all older adults are wiser. Many older adults become adept at handling life’s challenges, yet barriers to ageing abound, including ageism, physical changes and mental health concerns. Hear from internationally acclaimed speaker Professor Bob Knight as he discusses getting wiser as we get older from 6.30pm–7.30pm on Thursday, August 13, in room 212, level 2, Sir Llew Edwards Building (14), Campbell Road, St Lucia campus. Seniors Week
To celebrate Seniors Week (August 15–22), the UQ Inter-Professional Clinics are excited to be hosting a number of free morning events for everyone to enjoy. Spanish Crown applauds UQ
UQ Professor Alfredo Martínez Expósito has received recognition from the Spanish Crown for his work in promoting Spanish language and culture in Australia. Professor Martínez Expósito, Head of the School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies, recently accepted the Cross of the Order of Civil Merit at the residence of the Spanish Ambassador in Canberra. The future of tourism: a climate change perspective

Medical students centrestage
UQ medical students are busy with rehearsals for the singing, dancing and acting extravaganza Med Rev 09. The revue will be held at the Schonell Theatre from Sunday, with students responsible for everything from scripts and choreography to performances and behind-the-scenes work. Med Rev 09 will be staged at the Schonell Theatre from 6.30pm on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday - please note that the Sunday and Tuesday performances are sold out. Cost: $20–$25. Nominations are now open for 2009 Miracle Worker Awards. 1960s comic strip – science fact or science fiction?
In this free public seminar, School of English, Media and Art History lecturer, Dr Maureen Burns, will discuss “Frontiers of Science”, a popular science comic strip published in The Sydney Morning Herald between 1961 and 1979, and syndicated to 200 newspapers around the world. What can it tell us about the relations between art and (popular) science in the 1960s? Backpack to briefcase
The UQ Student Alumni program hosts its next Backpack to Briefcase Career Breakfast on Friday, August 14, from 7.30am–9am. The seminar topic will be “Enterprise and the Young Entrepreneur: Making the Dream a Reality” and explore the opportunities students and alumni can create to become successful entrepreneurs. The seminar will focus on the importance of establishing a culture of entrepreneurship at university and in the workplace, the power of forming mentoring relationships, and how to turn commercialisation concepts into marketplace realities. Facelift for Main Refectory
The Main Refectory is currently undergoing renovations but will still be serving drinks, sandwiches, hot meals and roasts Monday–Friday, between 7.30am-3pm. The mobile food van at the top of Campbell Place will be serving burgers, hot chips and snacks between 7.30am-5pm.
TEDI hits the road
The Teaching and Educational Development Institute (TEDI) is preparing to move from Building 15 to Buildings 90 and 96 (corner of Hood and Rock streets), St Lucia campus, on Monday, August 24. TEDI is heading to this temporary location while the “TEDI hut” is demolished to make way for construction of the new Learning Innovation Building. Staff development seminars at TEDI are scheduled to resume in the Seminar Room (room 215, Building 90, entrance from Rock Street) from Monday, September 7.

The UQ Musculoskeletal and Sports Injury Clinic can manage a wide variety of sporting injuries sustained by athletes of all levels. From August to October, a sports speciality clinic is offered in conjunction with the postgraduate sports physiotherapy program. Are you a parent who is feeling stressed?
A new parenting program is being offered for parents who are feeling pressure from the demands of parenthood. The program is run in small groups and is open to anyone caring for a child/or children aged between two and 10 years, who is feeling down, stressed or emotionally overwhelmed in the parenting role and can attend eight sessions at the university in St Lucia. Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program
The Queensland – Smithsonian Fellowship Program provides Fellowships each year to enable Queenslanders to undertake research projects at the Smithsonian Institution, the world’s largest museum complex and research organisation. Up to three fellowships will be awarded in 2009. The duration of a Fellowship is 13 to 26 weeks with a maximum award of $30,000. Reminder: Applications close at 5pm on Friday, August 14. The Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies presents a five-day mediation course at St Lucia Campus from Thursday to Saturday, August 6–8, and Thursday and Friday, August 13 and 14.
