Backpack to briefcase
The UQ Student Alumni program hosts its next Backpack to Briefcase Career Breakfast on Friday, August 14, from 7.30am–9am. The seminar topic will be “Enterprise and the Young Entrepreneur: Making the Dream a Reality” and explore the opportunities students and alumni can create to become successful entrepreneurs. The seminar will focus on the importance of establishing a culture of entrepreneurship at university and in the workplace, the power of forming mentoring relationships, and how to turn commercialisation concepts into marketplace realities. Translational Research Institute Queensland receives record $50 million gift

Just reward for good all-rounder
Catherine Drummond, a fourth year Arts/Law student has been selected as the inaugural winner of the PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Excellence Award. PwC and the UQ Union launched the award at the beginning of 2009 to recognise students who not only achieve excellent academic results but also participate and excel in activities outside of the lecture theatre. UQ Union will be working with PwC again in 2010 to recognise more of Queensland’s high-calibre students.
Facelift for Main Refectory
The Main Refectory is currently undergoing renovations but will still be serving drinks, sandwiches, hot meals and roasts Monday–Friday, between 7.30am-3pm. The mobile food van at the top of Campbell Place will be serving burgers, hot chips and snacks between 7.30am-5pm.
TEDI hits the road
The Teaching and Educational Development Institute (TEDI) is preparing to move from Building 15 to Buildings 90 and 96 (corner of Hood and Rock Streets), St Lucia campus, on Monday, August 24. TEDI is heading to this temporary location while the “TEDI hut” is demolished to make way for construction of the new Teaching and Learning Innovation Building. Staff development seminars at TEDI are scheduled to resume in the Seminar Room (room 215, Building 90, entrance from Rock Street) from Monday, September 7.
Student healthcare case challenge
All students, staff and members of the healthcare community are invited to attend the inaugural launch of the Australian HealthFusion Team Challenge (OzHFTC), on Friday, August 7, in the UQ Centre, Union Road, St Lucia campus with preliminary heats between student teams from noon–2pm and then the final play-offs between 4pm–5.30pm. A complimentary catered cocktail function will conclude the evening. Inter-professional student teams comprised of representatives of a wide range of health professions work together over several weeks to develop a management plan for a complex clinical case study that reflects a national health priority. Are you a parent who is feeling stressed?
A new parenting program is being offered for parents who are feeling pressure from the demands of parenthood. The program is run in small groups and is open to anyone caring for a child/or children aged between two and 10 years, who is feeling down, stressed or emotionally overwhelmed in the parenting role and can attend eight sessions at the university in St Lucia. Pearls of wisdom from “Her Deepness”
Dr Sylvia Earle, legendary American oceanographer, explorer, author and marine conservationist will give a public lecture entitled “Thinking Blue: Shaping Global Ocean Policies” at Customs House on Tuesday, August 4. Referred to as “Her Deepness” by the The New Yorker and the The New York Times, “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress, and “Hero for the Planet” by TIME Magazine, Sylvia has received more than 100 national and international honours including the 2009 TED Prize and has a deep commitment to research through personal exploration. Cycle Two AUQA report
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Debbie Terry has thanked all University staff for their valuable contributions to the Australian Universities Quality Agency audit process. The report on UQ has been released. The University was awarded 13 commendations by the nation’s peak independent higher education quality auditor, which praised a range of UQ teaching and learning initiatives. The full report is now online at the Teaching and Learning at UQ website or the AUQA website.
St Lucia Open Day on Sunday
Thank you to all staff who assisted the University to welcome prospective students, their families and friends on Sunday, August 2, at the St Lucia Open Day, from 9am–3pm. Open Day at the Ipswich Campus will be on Wednesday, August 19, from 3.30pm–6.30pm and at Gatton Campus on Sunday, August 23, 9.30am–3pm.
Vice-Chancellor’s address to staff
Staff who were unable to attend an open address by UQ Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Greenfield on July 21 can view the PowerPoint presentation at: www.uq.edu.au/about/vice-chancellor-staff-address. The site also continues to link to the staff engagement survey and the UQ school-based performance framework report and charts. A UQ username and password is required to access these sites and files.
Enterprise bargaining update
The University and union representatives met for the sixth time on July 22 to continue the current round of Enterprise Bargaining. Negotiations continue to progress, with the next meeting scheduled for Thursday, August 6. The University reminds staff of their right post-July 1 to participate directly in the bargaining process. Please refer to the Enterprise Bargaining website for details of this communication, for information about the bargaining process, and for reports on discussions so far. The website is regularly updated with a summary of progress after each meeting, and other postings.

The Centenary website has a password-protected area for staff to access a range of different resources, including: an email banner and signature, colour and mono versions of the centenary logo, and copy blurbs for use in publications. Access them by using your UQ staff login and password.

Is Anybody There?, a new film at the Schonell Cinemas starring Sir Michael Caine, charts the unlikely friendship between a retired magician (Caine) and Edward, an afterlife-obsessed, bookish 10-year-old. From the producers of Little Miss Sunshine and Harry Potter, Sir Michael gives one of the finest performances of his career as a reluctant resident of a family-run retirement home in a seaside English town in the late 1980s.

Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program
The Queensland – Smithsonian Fellowship Program provides Fellowships each year to enable Queenslanders to undertake research projects at the Smithsonian Institution, the world’s largest museum complex and research organisation. Up to three fellowships will be awarded in 2009. The duration of a Fellowship is 13 to 26 weeks with a maximum award of $30,000. Reminder: Applications close at 5pm on Friday, August 14. Conflict resolution training for staff
The Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies presents a five-day mediation course at St Lucia Campus from Thursday to Saturday, August 6–8, and Thursday and Friday, August 13 and 14. This interactive course is developed to meet the National Mediator Accreditation Standards, assisting participants to gain the essential negotiation, mediation and communication skills required to become accredited mediators and UQ staff are eligible for a 20 percent discount on the workshop fee. The ageing mind
The UQ Ageing Mind Initiative and Institute for Social Science Research present “Longitudinal Survey Data in Older Cohorts: Findings and Progress from Australian Longitudinal Studies”. This seminar day presents a diverse array of high-profile researchers representing some of the most influential longitudinal studies in Australia today. It will be held from 8.30am–4.30pm on Monday, August 10, at Women’s College Playhouse, College Rd, St Lucia Campus.
