Cycle Two AUQA report
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Debbie Terry thanks all University staff for their valuable contributions to the Australian Universities Quality Agency audit process. The report on UQ has been released. The University was awarded 13 commendations by the nation’s peak independent higher education quality auditor, which praised a range of UQ teaching and learning initiatives. The full report is now online at the Teaching and Learning at UQ website or the AUQA website.
UQ Ipswich anniversary and health launch
Our Ipswich Campus celebrated its 10th anniversary on Friday with a special event which also launched the teaching of Medicine at the campus.
St Lucia Open Day on Sunday
Thanks to all staff who will assist the University to welcome prospective students, their families and friends on Sunday August 2 for the St Lucia Open Day, from 9am-3pm. Open Day at the Ipswich Campus will be on August 19 from 3.30pm-6.30pm and at Gatton Campus on August 23, 9.30am-3pm.
Vice-Chancellor’s address to staff
Staff who were unable to attend an open address by UQ Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Greenfield on July 21 can view the PowerPoint presentation at: www.uq.edu.au/about/vice-chancellor-staff-address. The site also continues to link to the staff engagement survey and the UQ school-based performance framework report and charts. A UQ username and password is required to access these sites and files.
Enterprise bargaining update
The University and union representatives met for the sixth time on July 22 to continue the current round of Enterprise Bargaining. Negotiations continue to progress, with the next meeting scheduled for August 6. The University reminds staff of their right post-July 1 to participate directly in the bargaining process. Please refer to the Enterprise Bargaining website for details of this communication, for information about the bargaining process, and for reports on discussions so far. The website is regularly updated with a summary of progress after each meeting, and other postings.
Australia supports Asia Pacific R2P Centre
Minister for Foreign Affairs Stephen Smith has announced that the Federal Government will provide $1.8 million to the Asia-Pacific Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, based at UQ.
UQ earns AQUIS award
UQ has been awarded a certificate of commendation by the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service.

Main Refectory temporarily closed
The main St Lucia refectory is closed due to temporary renovations. Staff can still purchase refectory favourites from the Food Bus (Campbell place), Physiology Refectory (Building #63) and Biology Refectory (Building #94).
Busways open next week
The first stage of the Northern Busway and the $366 million Boggo Road/Eastern Busway will both open for operation on August 3.

Centenary resources for staff
The Centenary website has a password-protected area for staff to access a range of different resources, including: an email banner and signature, colour and mono versions of the centenary logo, and copy blurbs for use in publications. Access them by using your UQ staff login and password.

Fulbright Symposium registrations closing
Registrations close on Wednesday, July 29 for this year’s Fulbright Symposium: the US-Australia Free Trade Agreement in Canberra on August 24-25. Speakers include The Hon. Mark Vaile, former Minister for Trade, responsible for the development and implementation of the Agreement, and Professor Mac Destler from the University of Maryland, a leading expert on trade policy. UQ Centre for Clinical Research hosts three seminars this week

Two free Blackboard-focused events for staff
Blackboard Usergroup (Bbug) Day on Thursday, July 30 will be a hands-on session with the new version of Blackboard – Blackboard 9, for academic staff in online teaching and learning. Queensland Brain Institute advanced neuroscience seminar series
Members of the public are invited to attend the remaining lectures in the series, Building a Brain, in the auditorium, level 7, Queensland Brain Institute on July 29, August 5 and August 14. - People with current neck and arm pain to participate in physiotherapy treatment study. Symptoms should have been present for four weeks or more and not caused by a vehicle accident or other trauma.

- People with Atrial Fibrillation who are currently taking warfarin. Trial of new therapies as an alternative to warfarin which are as effective but require fewer INR tests.

- Parents of healthy boys aged 11–15 with no developmental disabilities to join in a meaningful children's food study.

- People with Type 2 diabetics but not achieving adequate blood sugars control on least 1.5g/day metformin (Diabex, Diaformin) only and close to needing insulin. Trial of new additional therapy which promotes weight loss and may help control blood sugars before Insulin is needed.

- Volunteers to assist at the Australian Health Care Team Challenge Friday, August 7. Two-hour shifts available from 12noon–7pm. Tasks include welcoming guests, shadowing VIPs, handing out programs and raffle tickets, timekeeping, wait duties and supervising registration desks. Volunteers receive a gift and a certificate of appreciation.

- Males/females (18-45 years) with chronic neck pain to undertake one supervised exercise session and undergo a MRI exam of their neck. There is no cost to the participant and no side-effects from the MRI. The study will be at The Wesley Hospital. Volunteers reimbursed for participation.

- People aged 18-65 with current neck pain following whiplash injury incurred during a motor vehicle accident three months to two years ago, to participate in a study investigating the effects of dry-needling, exercise and advice. Each included participant receives $60 towards travel & time for each assessment (five in total over one year).

- Individuals for a lab-based study on attitudes, mood and decision-making at St Lucia campus. This research may contain death-related concepts that some may find confronting.
