Sir Llew Edwards Building scores top award

The Sir Llew Edwards Building at the St Lucia campus has won the premier architectural award for Queensland, the FDG Stanley Award for Public Architecture at the Australian Institute of Architects' 2009 Queensland Architecture Awards (Architect: Richard Kirk Architect and ML Design). The Science Learning Centre was commended in the Interior Design category (Architect: m3architecture).

Graduations this week

Congratulations to almost 3000 people who will graduate this week. They include the first graduating cohort of the Bachelor of Midwifery at Ipswich today.

UQ Answers – previously only available to current students - is now available for Future Students and the UQ community. UQ Answers is a module in the UQ CRM system and is in use within the student-facing areas of the Student and Administrative Services Division (including the Student Centres), and the BEL Faculty.

Business/Higher Education Round Table awards open

Applications have opened for the B-HERT Awards to recognise outstanding achievements in collaboration between business and higher education in research & development and education & training. Details: online.

2010 sporting scholarships - applications open

Sporting scholarships are available to outstanding sportsmen and women in 2010. They include UQ Sports Achievement Scholarships (valued at $6000 for one year) and Clem Jones Sporting Scholarship (valued at $6000 per year for three years). Details: online or phone 3346 6243. Vice-Chancellor’s address to all UQ staff

All staff are invited to attend an open address by Professor Paul Greenfield AO, Vice-Chancellor, from 3.30pm–4.30pm on Tuesday, July 21. The topic will be “2009 and Beyond: Yin and Yang”. The address will include a question-and-answer session. Light refreshments will be provided at each of the venues at the close of the event. The address will be video-linked from the UQ Centre at St Lucia to Herston, Gatton and Ipswich campuses.

Changed traffic conditions at St Lucia for Open Day

Please note that the following roads will be closed from 8pm Saturday August 1 – 5pm Sunday August 2 for the St Lucia Open Day:

  • Campbell Road from the intersection with Blair Drive
  • Union Road from the intersection with Blair Drive
  • Cooper Road from the intersection at College Road

Submit your overseas travel details

The University is required by law to submit to State Parliament, as part of the Annual Report, information on overseas travel undertaken by University employees. Download the template from the UQ website.

Public lecture: What can we learn from Iraq?

The School of Political Science & International Studies is holding a public lecture, with speaker Major General Jim Molan on July 28 from 4 - 5.30pm at Conference Room, Level 1, Duhig Building (#Bldg 2).

UQSOPA holds annual general meeting

UQ Secretaries and Office Professionals Association AGM, including election of new Executive Committee, will be on Tuesday July 28, 5pm-6pm at the Senate room, level 5, Brian Wilson Chancellery, St Lucia. Registration closes July 22 for a 10-week personal training program

UQ Sport and the UQ School of Human Movement Studies are pleased to offer a 10-week Practicum Placement Personal Training program. Commencing in early August, the 10-week program includes:

  • two fitness assessments (preliminary and final, up to one hour each)
  • personalised program
  • eight one-on-one personal training sessions (one hour per week)
  • additional 10-visit pass to the UQ SPORT and Fitness Gym (valued at $110.50)

Seven secrets of highly successful RHD students (for supervisors) workshop

Students attending the seven secrets workshop consistently report improved progress towards completing their Research Higher Degrees. Two free Blackboard-focused events for staff

Blackboard Usergroup (Bbug) Day on Thursday July 30 will be a hands-on session with the new version of Blackboard – Blackboard 9, for academic staff in online teaching and learning. Technical discussions on 3rd party applications (Facebook, iPhone, iTunesU) and integration with Blackboard will also take place. Register to: susiegb@uq.edu.au. Australian Health Workforce Institute tours UK academic

Professor Deb Humphris is the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Education and Professor of Health Care Development, the University of Southampton, United Kingdom. Her public lecture: "Multiprofessional working, interprofessional learning and primary health care: a way forward” will be on Monday, August 3 in the auditorium, UQ Centre for Clinical Research, Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital, Herston, from 5.30pm to 6.30pm, following by drinks. Queensland Brain Institute advanced neuroscience seminar series

Members of the public are invited to attend the remaining lectures in the series, “Building a Brain”, in the auditorium, level 7, Queensland Brain Institute on July 22, July 29, August 5 and August 14.   • Parents of healthy boys aged 11- 15 with no developmental disabilities to join in a meaningful children's food study.

  • People with Type 2 diabetics but not achieving adequate blood sugars control on least 1.5g/day metformin (Diabex, Diaformin) only and close to needing insulin. Trial of new additional therapy which promotes weight loss and may help control blood sugars before Insulin is needed.

  • Volunteers to assist at the Australian Health Care Team Challenge Friday August 7. Two-hour shifts available from 12-7pm. Tasks include welcoming guests, shadowing VIPs, handing out programs & raffle tickets, timekeeping, wait duties and supervising registration desks. Volunteers receive a gift and a certificate of appreciation.
    Details: Emma Poulsen. Males/females (18-45 years) with chronic neck pain to undertake one supervised exercise session and undergo a MRI exam of their neck. There is no cost to the participant and no side-effects from the MRI. The study will be at The Wesley Hospital. Volunteers reimbursed for participation.

  • People aged 18-65 with current neck pain following whiplash injury incurred during a motor vehicle accident three months to two years ago, to participate in a study investigating the effects of dry-needling, exercise and advice. Each included participant receives $60 towards travel & time for each assessment (five in total over one year). Details: s.valentin@uq.edu.au.

  • Individuals for a lab-based study on attitudes, mood and decision-making at St Lucia campus. This research may contain death-related concepts that some may find confronting.
