Australian Learning and Teaching Council citations

Congratulations to UQ’s recipients of ALTC $10,000 citations, who will receive their awards at the Gallery of Modern Art on August 18. They include Dr Stephen Anderson, Dr Felicity Baker, Dr Victor Galea, Dr Carrie Ritchie, Professor Tapan Saha and the UQ Librarians Referencing Software Support Team.

Swine flu research grant

Professor Mark Kendall of the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology and his team have been awarded $179,472 for a project entitled “Nanopatch immunisation against pandemic Novel A (H1N1) influenza virus 09: potent immunity at a reduced dose.” Funding was made under the fast-tracked National Health and Medical Research Council’s H1N1 (swine flu) Medical Research Projects announced this month.

UQ Library awarded for high school connection

The University has won a prestigious award for an innovative program linking high school students with its extensive library resources.

Leading sociologist takes lead in SBS Faculty

Professor David de Vaus has commenced as Executive Dean of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (SBS). He succeeds Professor Cindy Gallois who has acted in the position since January 2008. Professor de Vaus joins UQ following a long association with La Trobe University as Head of the School of Social Sciences, and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. UQ's Vice Chancellor Professor Paul Greenfield welcomed Professor de Vaus, saying his recruitment was a significant gain for the University. Professor de Vaus commenced at UQ on July 1. U21 delegates examine Climate Change Adaptation

From July 13 to 24, UQ is hosting the U21 Summer School, organised and held by the School of Geography, Planning & Environmental Management. The theme this year is Climate Change Adaptation. This year’s Summer School will bring together more than 100 of the brightest students from the Universitas 21 network to engage in lectures, workshops and problem-solving activities related to various aspects of climate change.

2010 Academic Scholarships - applications now open

UQ will again be offering Academic Scholarships to high achieving current school leavers and gap year students who accept the offer of a place at UQ in 2010. The following scholarships will be awarded:

  • UQ Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships ( $12,000 a year for up to 5 years) – for students achieving at the very top of the OP1 band/equivalent
  • UQ Excellence Scholarships ($6,000 a year for up to 4 years) – for OP 1/equivalent students with demonstrated outstanding leadership and/or community service achievements
  • UQ Merit Scholarships valued at $6,000 for the first year of study – for OP1-3 students with demonstrated outstanding leadership and/or community service achievements

Application is via an online application form available on the scholarships website (click on ‘Academic Excellence’). Applications close 30 October 30, 2009. Please assist in advertising these scholarships to prospective students at TSXPO and Open Days.

Vice-Chancellor’s address to all UQ staff

All staff are invited to attend an open address by Professor Paul Greenfield AO, Vice-Chancellor, from 3.30pm–4.30pm on Tuesday, July 21. The topic will be “2009 and Beyond: Yin and Yang”. The address will include a question-and-answer session. Light refreshments will be provided at each of the venues at the close of the event. The address will be video-linked from the UQ Centre at St Lucia to Herston, Gatton and Ipswich campuses. Please register your intention to attend online.

New brand templates now available

A variety of marketing and communication collateral templates, including poster and flyer shells, bookmarks, name badges and invitations, are now available for you to download from the Brand website. Delicious deals for staff

While the students are away, staff can enjoy some delicious UQ staff only deals. From June 29 till July 24, UQ staff can get a muffin and regular coffee from Darwin’s Café for only $5, pizzas from the Pizza Caffe are only $10 from noon – 2pm, Monday – Friday, and buy one meal at The 2nd Degree Bar & Grill and get a second meal for half price.   • AGM including election of new Executive Committee will be held from 5pm–6pm on Tuesday, July 28, in the Senate Room, Level 5, BWC. All positions will be declared vacant at the meeting and new officers elected for the following roles on the executive committee including president; vice-president; honorary secretary; honorary treasurer; executive members – St Lucia and other sites based (4); executive member – Gatton-based (1); and executive member – Ipswich-based (1). 10-week personal training program for $250

UQ Sport and the UQ School of Human Movement Studies are pleased to offer a 10-week Practicum Placement Personal Training program. Commencing in early August, the 10-week program includes:

  • two fitness assessments (preliminary and final, up to one hour each)
  • personalised program
  • eight one-on-one personal training sessions (one hour per week)
  • additional 10-visit pass to the UQ SPORT and Fitness Gym (valued at $110.50)

Queensland Brain Institute 2009 Advanced Neuroscience Seminar Series

The Queensland Brain Institute will host five advanced neuroscience seminars during the coming weeks, each an extension of the theme “Building a Brain”. While members of the public are welcome to attend, the series is more likely to appeal to people with a background in medicine or biological science.

The first seminar is on Wednesday, July 15 at 6pm – 8pm. Associate Professor Elliot Sherr, MD/PhD , University of California, San Francisco, USA will discuss: “Building a Brain – developmental and genetic causes of epilepsy and agenesis of the corpus collosum”.
Venue: Queensland Brain Institute, Level 7 Auditorium, Upland Road, St Lucia.

Oxfam Seminar – presented by Andrew Hewett, Executive Director of Oxfam Australia

Andrew will use examples from OXFAM’s international work to demonstrate how OXFAM has successfully, or not, moved beyond the rhetoric of partnership, empowerment, capacity building, mainstreaming and aid effectiveness. The seminar will be on Wednesday, July 29 at 5pm – 6.30pm at the conference room, level 1, Social Sciences and Humanities Library, Duhig Building, St Lucia.

Conflict Resolution Training for Staff

The Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies will hold a five-day mediation course at St Lucia Campus from August 6-8 and August 13-14. This interactive course meets the National Mediator Accreditation Standards, and will assist participants to gain essential negotiation, mediation and communication skills required to become an accredited mediator. UQ staff are eligible for a 20 per cent discount on the workshop fee. Further information: online.

Diversification of Innate Immune Signalling

Please join a presentation by Dr Christine Wells, from The Eskitis Institute for Cell and Molecular Therapies at Griffith University, entitled: “Diversification of innate immune signalling: New roles for old favourites”.
