The Office of the Executive Director (Operations) has issued a revised UQ Organisational Chart, available online.
Top engineers from UQ
UQ staff and graduates feature prominently in the 2009 list of Australia's 100 most influential engineers. The list, published annually in the June edition of Engineers Australia, identifies the country’s leading engineers in academia/research, associations, consulting, engineering expertise, industry, public service and politics/other. Swine flu information for Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders
The Australian Government has changed the Pandemic Response to Protect, which aims to look after groups vulnerable to influenza infection in the community. One of the vulnerable groups are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. There is a page on the Queensland Health website for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with good resources available for use to help in protecting themselves from catching H1N1 (swine flu).
Enterprise bargaining
From July 1, the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) requires all employers engaging in enterprise bargaining with their employees to inform them of their right to have a bargaining representative during the course of enterprise bargaining. The Notice of Employee Representational Rights for UQ staff can be accessed online. A hard copy of the Notice will also be available from faculty or institute human resources teams. New Freedom of Information laws
On July 1, 2009, Queenland's Freedom of Information Act 1992 was replaced by the Right to Information Act 2009 (RTI Act) and the Information Privacy Act 2009 (IP Act). The RTI Act requires the University and other agencies to provide the maximum disclosure of information through its publication or administrative access scheme on request. The RTI Act is complemented by the IP Act, which establishes a right to access and to amend personal information. The IP Act also specifies how the University should collect, store, use and disclose personal information. For details, contact the Right to Information and Privacy Coordinator. Reorganisation of the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology
The Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology (EAIT) has recently undergone an extensive reorganisation to enable it to better engage with external and internal stakeholders and fulfil its objectives in learning, discovery and engagement. A major part of the reorganisation has been the disestablishment of the School of Engineering and the creation of three new schools in its place. As of July 1, the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology is comprised of the following schools and Centre:

More water saved
UQ’s St Lucia campus continues to significantly decrease its water-consumption levels. Latest available data from March 2009 reveal that UQ’s ongoing efforts to conserve water have resulted in a 45 percent reduction compared to 2004/2005. This is an improvement on the same time last year which achieved a 41 percent reduction. Read full story online.

The Institute of Modern Languages celebrated its 75th Anniversary early in June with great success. More fun at Playhouse
Playhouse Parent and Childcare Centre has secured funding for new outdoor equipment to the value of $26,000 from an application to the Community Gaming Commission Fund. Playhouse Director Margaret Griffiths said the centre was very grateful to the Gaming Commission and the children coming to the centre would benefit immensely from the addition of a large, colourful central feature with two different styles of slides, plus a large selection of educational, safe and exciting equipment which would supplement the current range.
10-week personal training program for $250

Winner of the 2009 Fryer Library Award announced
Dr Jane Hunt from the School of English, Media Studies and Art History has won the 2009 Fryer Library Award. She will begin her project, working on Fryer’s extensive Daphne Mayo collection, in the second semester of 2009. The collection consists of 98 boxes of correspondence and other written records as well as sculptures, artworks and photographs. More information about the Fryer Library Award is available online.

Pallara State School, at 282 Ritchie Road, Pallara, was officially opened on August 24, 1959, and to commemorate its 50th anniversary, the school will host a fun-filled day on Friday, August 29, from 11am–4pm. Executive appointments
Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Greenfield has announced the appointment of Professor Max Lu as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) as from June 29. From the same date, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Debbie Terry assumed line management responsibility for the six research institutes and the UQ Graduate School, with the Institute Directors and the Dean, UQ Graduate School, reporting directly to Professor Terry. Also from June 29, Professor Alan Lawson took on a full-time role in a retitled portfolio, reflecting his current responsibilities – Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and International). The vacated position of Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research Linkages) will not be filled.

Finding a loving home would be the cat's whiskers
UQ's School of Veterinary Science has a number of cats desperately looking for loving new homes. Rescued from the pound, they have been cared for by University researchers while they have taken part in a study and now it is time for them to be adopted. There are both male and female cats of all ages. They are all desexed, vaccinated, wormed and micro-chipped. Details: Renee or Nicole on ext. 53064.

Vice-Chancellor’s address to all UQ staff
All staff are invited to attend an open address by Professor Paul Greenfield AO, Vice-Chancellor, from 3.30pm–4.30pm on Tuesday, July 21. The topic will be “2009 and Beyond: Yin and Yang”. The address will include a question-and-answer session. Light refreshments will be provided at each of the venues at the close of the event. The address will be video-linked from the UQ Centre at St Lucia to Herston, Gatton and Ipswich campuses. Please register your intention to attend online.
Representing UQ at student recruitment events
UQ staff working at TSXPO (July 18–19) and UQ open days in August are invited to attend a training session at the UQ Centre lecture theatre from 10am–11am on Monday, July 13. This session will provide staff with information about organising and participating in recruitment events and will cover frequently asked questions, common audiences and event requirements. Phoenix network upgrade project
A major upgrade of the whole university network that will provide significantly improved speed and access has been agreed. The upgrade will bring on-campus networks up to a new faster standard and include a tenfold increase in the reach of the University’s wireless network, which will extend to most buildings and open spaces on our campuses and University sites. Together, these projects form the Phoenix programme. The programme will be managed by a steering committee with wide representation, as well as an advisory committee with representatives from each Faculty and Institute together with representatives of central service divisions. UQ Travel Management Project
Finance and Business Services are pleased to announce the initiation of this project to help identify opportunities, then implement changes, to improve policy and process across all aspects of travel at UQ. Project aims include reducing the amount of paperwork required to take a simple trip, finding better ways of covering costs than advances and acquittals and eliminating opportunities for improper use of University funds or “double-dipping” for allowances and reimbursements. Please feel free to invite Project Manager Paul Findlay to your next staff meeting to discuss the project. UQ Answers one click away for future students
A custom Internet portal, designed specifically to meet the needs of the UQ’s future students, will soon be available as a unique destination and accessible through many one-click links on the UQ website, including http://www.uq.edu.au/study/future-students.html. SBS, Arts, BEL and Health Sciences are among the first faculties to use the system. This is an extension of a similar service for current students (https://uqcurrent.custhelp.com/app/) that has successfully been in operation for the past three months. Both current and future custom portals are being implemented by the Office of Marketing and Communication's CRM Project Team, who are in the second year of an enterprise-wide initiative. Meetings between University representatives and union representatives are continuing. Use your noodle and see a charming film
Noodle, a new film at the Schonell, follows the story of Israeli flight attendant Miri, who suddenly and unexpectedly finds herself left with her Chinese cleaner’s son, dubbed “Noodle” when his mother leaves him with Miri for an hour and doesn’t come back. Noodle doesn’t speak Hebrew or English so it’s not easy trying to find out where he lives and what happened to his mother. Miri, twice widowed as a result of Israel’s wars, lives with her abrasive and recently separated sister Gila. This charming film, co-written and directed by Ayelet Menahemi is a real crowd-pleaser. Performances are solid throughout with young Baoqi Chen adorable as Noodle.

The Drumley Walk travels from Beaudesert to Southport in the footsteps of Aboriginal community leader, Billy Drumley (1853–1951) through farms, forests and roads. Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program
The Queensland–Smithsonian Fellowship Program provides fellowships each year to enable Queenslanders to undertake research projects at the Smithsonian Institution, the world's largest museum complex and research organisation. Applications open for 2010 Fulbright Scholarships
Valued at up to $A50,000, Fulbright scholarships are open to Australian citizens to undertake research or study in the United States for three–12 months. Applications are open to postgraduates (to conduct research related to their Australian PhDs, or enrol in US degrees); postdoctoral, professional and senior scholars from any field of study. The Inclusive Museum Conference 2009
This conference with its overall theme of “Enabling Diversity, Sustaining Development” will be held between July 8–11 at UQ. Participants are welcome to submit a presentation proposal either for a 30-minute paper, 60-minute workshop, jointly presented 90-minute colloquium session or a virtual session. Conservation initiatives in Marovo Lagoon
An interdisciplinary seminar highlighting marine and legal aspects of a conservation project in Marovo Lagoon will be held from noon–1pm on Friday, July 10, in the Sir Samuel Griffith Room (1–W341) in the Forgan Smith Building. The three-year project by a UQ team, funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, is to provide an integrated approach to the environmental management of Marovo Lagoon that will support protection of the region’s high biodiversity and allow for sustainable use of the lagoon’s resources to support local communities. ISSR Winter School
Two leading international scholars will join the Institute for Social Science Research, in cooperation with participating schools in the Faculty of Social & Behavioural Sciences, to present two postgraduate workshops (known as Winter Schools) on key research themes in the social sciences. Each International Visiting Fellow will design and conduct one workshop, of five days duration, in the inter-semester break during July 2009. Details: online.
Forum on research and cultural heritage attractions
Special guests, Professors John Falk and Lynn Dierking (Oregon State University), will present some of their recent work, while a UQ School of Tourism team will present findings from recent projects carried out at Sea World, Underwater World, Mon Repos, whale watching, Queensland Museum, Brisbane Botanic Gardens (Mt Coot-tha), and the National Gallery of Victoria. French studies conference
The 17th conference of the Australian Society for French Studies entitled “Tekhne, technique, technology” will be held from July 15–17 at UQ. Cultures of violence and conflict explored at conference
UQ’s Cultural History Project will host the 2009 Conference of the International Society for Cultural History. International scholars will address a broad series of questions pertaining to cultures of violence and conflict, highlighted by keynote presentations by Professor Joanna Bourke from Birbeck College, UK, Associate Professor Alice Yang, UC Santa Cruz, and Dr Alastair Blanshard, University of Sydney.
