The latest

UQ generates first Australian swine flu vaccine

UQ has produced the first Australian batch of a new candidate vaccine against the H1N1 "swine flu" virus. Professor Anton Middelberg, from UQ's Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, said the vaccine matched the virus found in the first US case of swine flu, a 10-year-old boy in San Diego. Executive appointments

Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Greenfield has announced the appointment of Professor Max Lu as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) as from June 29. From the same date, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Debbie Terry assumed line management responsibility for the six research institutes and the UQ Graduate School, with the Institute Directors and the Dean, UQ Graduate School, reporting directly to Professor Terry. Also from June 29, Professor Alan Lawson took on a full-time role in a retitled portfolio that reflected his current responsibilities – Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and International). The vacated position of Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research Linkages) will not be filled.

UQ awarded more than $5 million in fellowships

The University has received two prestigious new national fellowships, targeting research into improved coral reef management and an alternative to antibiotics. UQ’s Australian Laureate Fellowships are among only 15 selected from a nationwide field of 148, and the only fellowships awarded to a Queensland university. Read full story online.

UQ students top of the world in Airbus competition

A team of UQ students has won the inaugural Airbus “Fly Your Ideas” challenge at the Paris-Le Bourget Air Show. The “COz” team won for its project on the use of the castor plant to develop the first-ever, single, plant-based, high-performance composite materials for aircraft cabin components. The goal is to reduce dependency on non-renewable sources and improve end-of-life disposal thus contributing to a reduction of aviation carbon footprint. Read the full story online.

Enterprise bargaining

Meetings between University representatives and union representatives are continuing. Staff will be advised formally of major developments, but in the meantime, a summary of each of the meetings will be posted on the “Communications to Staff” section of the University’s Enterprise Bargaining website.

Adventurous volunteers needed for indigenous pilgrimage

The Drumley Walk travels from Beaudesert to Southport in the footsteps of Aboriginal community leader, Billy Drumley (1853–1951) through farms, forests and roads. Volunteers and participants are invited to attend an information session at Yugambeh Museum, cnr Plantation Road & Martens Street, Beenleigh, from 10am–4pm, on Sunday, July 12. Phoenix network upgrade project

A major upgrade of the whole university network that will provide significantly improved speed and access has been agreed. The upgrade will bring on-campus networks up to a new faster standard and include a tenfold increase in the reach of the University’s wireless network, which will extend to most buildings and open spaces on our campuses and University sites.  Together, these projects form the Phoenix programme. The programme will be managed by a steering committee with wide representation, as well as an advisory committee with representatives from each Faculty and Institute together with representatives of central service divisions. Swine flu

In 2010, UQ will celebrate its centenary year. Throughout the year, numerous events will take place, including celebrations for the whole community. Mothering under the microscope

The fifth Australian international academic conference on motherhood entitled “The Mother and History: The Past and Present”, will be held at UQ from Thursday, July 2, until Saturday, July 4. This interdisciplinary conference will explore, examine, critique, theorise and respond to key issues that have arisen historically and affected mothers/mothering and what maternal issues are being created now which may affect future mothers. UQ100 special edition of Crossroads

Crossroads is inviting paper submissions for a special issue to be published in 2010. Papers relating to UQ and its state, including an aspect of at least one of Crossroads’ four key disciplines (history, philosophy, religion and classics) are welcome. Representing UQ at student recruitment events

UQ staff working at TSXPO (July 18–19) and UQ open days in August are invited to attend a training session at the UQ Centre lecture theatre from 10am–11am on Monday, July 13. This session will provide staff with information about organising and participating in recruitment events and will cover frequently asked questions, common audiences and event requirements. Finding a loving home would be the cat's whiskers

UQ's School of Veterinary Science has a number of cats desperately looking for loving new homes. Rescued from the pound, they have been cared for by University researchers while they have taken part in a study and now it is time for them to be adopted. There are both male and female cats of all ages. They are all desexed, vaccinated, wormed and micro-chipped. Details: Renee or Nicole on ext. 53064.

Sizzling Latin dancing

Conservation initiatives in Marovo Lagoon

An interdisciplinary seminar highlighting marine and legal aspects of a conservation project in Marovo Lagoon will be held from noon–1pm on Friday, July 10, in the Sir Samuel Griffith Room (1–W341) in the Forgan Smith Building. The three-year project by a UQ team, funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, is to provide an integrated approach to the environmental management of Marovo Lagoon that will support protection of the region’s high biodiversity and allow for sustainable use of the lagoon’s resources to support local communities. UQ Travel Management Project

Finance and Business Services are pleased to announce the initiation of this project to help identify opportunities, then implement changes, to improve policy and process across all aspects of travel at UQ. Project aims include reducing the amount of paperwork required to take a simple trip, finding better ways of covering costs than advances and acquittals and eliminating opportunities for improper use of University funds or “double-dipping” for allowances and reimbursements. UQ Answers one click away for future students

A custom Internet portal, designed specifically to meet the needs of the UQ’s future students, will soon be available as a unique destination and accessible through many one-click links on the UQ website, including http://www.uq.edu.au/study/future-students.html. SBS, Arts, BEL and Health Sciences are among the first faculties to use the system. This is an extension of a similar service for current students (https://uqcurrent.custhelp.com/app/) that has successfully been in operation for the past three months. Both current and future custom portals are being implemented by the Office of Marketing and Communication's CRM Project Team, who are in the second year of an enterprise-wide initiative. Vice-Chancellor’s address to all UQ staff

All staff are invited to attend an open address by Professor Paul Greenfield AO, Vice-Chancellor, from 3.30pm–4.30pm on Tuesday, July 21. The topic will be “2009 and Beyond: Yin and Yang”. The address will include a question-and-answer session. Light refreshments will be provided at each of the venues at the close of the event. Discipline Scholars needed

As part of the Australian Learning and Teaching Council’s Learning Networks program, Discipline Scholars are sought across a wide range of areas. Ideally, candidates will be senior academics who have established links across their disciplines with a strong commitment to learning and teaching. Opportunities exist for the roles to be taken up in a part-time capacity. Work is expected to begin in January, 2010, and expressions of interest for these positions close on October 2, 2009. Your feline friend can make a difference

Cat owners are invited to have their pets participate in a School of Veterinary Science study seeking an alternative to tablets for easier medication of cats. The study involves at-home administration of three different medication formulations including tablets, oral paste and oral liquid. Owners will be asked to complete questionnaires regarding ease of administration and cats will be re-examined after receiving each preparation for several days. Much-loved Australian PM a “lonely petunia”

The Chifleys of Busby Street, a new film at the Schonell Cinema explores the human face of Australian Prime Minister Ben Chifley (1945–1949). Chifley oversaw major achievements for the nation including the building of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme, expanded ABC funding and development of Australia’s own car, the Holden, and made the famous “light on the hill” speech. Andrew Pike’s film is as sincere and as simple as its subject – a humane man who acted on principle rather than to win votes and whose favourite song was “I’m a Lonely Little Petunia in an Onion Patch”.

The 2nd Degree Bar & Grill’s times during semester break

Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program

The Queensland–Smithsonian Fellowship Program provides fellowships each year to enable Queenslanders to undertake research projects at the Smithsonian Institution, the world's largest museum complex and research organisation. Applications open for 2010 Fulbright Scholarships

Valued at up to $A50,000, Fulbright scholarships are open to Australian citizens to undertake research or study in the United States for three–12 months. Scholarships can be started between July 1, 2010, and June 30, 2011. Applications are open to postgraduates (to conduct research related to their Australian PhD, or enrol in a US degree); postdoctoral, professional and senior scholars from any field of study. Challenges of mapping disease genes

Professor Matt Brown, of UQ’s Diamantina Institute, will present latest findings about two key genes involved in multiple sclerosis which has earned him recent media attention and a Nature Genetics publication. Centre for Clinical Research seminars

UQCCR will present two seminars this week. Dr Kiarash Khosrotehrani, Associate Professor at The University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research, will present the seminar “Fetal Contribution to Angiogenesis During Pregnancy: Sources and Implications” at 4.30pm on Thursday, July 2. Dr Mark Tuffley, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, will also present a talk on “Nutritional Carriers for Therapeutic Agents” at 11.30am on Friday, July 3. Graduate Attribute Symposium

This symposium is being held as part of the national dissemination strategy of the ALTC-funded National scoping of graduate attributes project (The National GAP) on Thursday, July 2. The Inclusive Museum Conference 2009

This conference with its overall theme of “Enabling Diversity, Sustaining Development” will be held between July 8–11 at UQ. Participants are welcome to submit a presentation proposal either for a 30-minute paper, 60-minute workshop, jointly presented 90-minute colloquium session or a virtual session. Challenge for museums in South Africa

Winter School in Mathematical & Computational Biology

Hosted by ARC Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Institute for Molecular Bioscience, the 2009 school will be held from July 6–10 in the auditorium, Queensland Bioscience Precinct, St Lucia. The series of winter schools is designed to introduce mathematical and computational biology and bioinformatics to advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students, and researchers in mathematics, IT or science who would like to learn about current problems and opportunities in computational bioscience. ISSR Winter School

Two leading international scholars will join the Institute for Social Science Research, in cooperation with participating schools in the Faculty of Social & Behavioural Sciences, to present two postgraduate workshops (known as Winter Schools) on key research themes in the social sciences. Each International Visiting Fellow will design and conduct one workshop, of five days duration, in the inter-semester break during July 2009. Details: click here.

Forum on research and cultural heritage attractions

Special guests, Professors John Falk and Lynn Dierking (Oregon State University), will present some of their recent work, while a UQ School of Tourism team will present findings from recent projects carried out at Sea World, Underwater World, Mon Repos, whale watching, Queensland Museum, Brisbane Botanic Gardens (Mt Coot-tha), and the National Gallery of Victoria. Technology and “women’s work”

French studies conference

The 17th conference of the Australian Society for French Studies entitled “Tekhne, technique, technology” will be held from July 15–17 at UQ. This conference brings together practitioners from the many branches of French Studies: language learning, French and Francophone literature, theory, cinema, art, architecture, history and politics. Cultures of violence and conflict explored at conference

UQ’s Cultural History Project will host the 2009 Conference of the International Society for Cultural History. International scholars will address a broad series of questions pertaining to cultures of violence and conflict, highlighted by keynote presentations by Professor Joanna Bourke from Birbeck College, UK, Associate Professor Alice Yang, UC Santa Cruz, and Dr Alastair Blanshard, University of Sydney.
