New brand templates now available

A variety of marketing and communication collateral templates, including poster and flyer shells, bookmarks, name badges and invitations, are now available for you to download from the Brand website. If you have questions regarding these templates or anything to do with the INSIGHT project, please email insight@uq.edu.au.

UQ Annual Report 2008 available

The UQ Annual Report 2008 is available online and also in hard copy form from OMC. Please be aware that from next year, 2010, the annual report will primarily be published electronically to the University website. The full detailed coverage of annual operational, management and financial reporting will continue to be published online. UQ Centenary

Stage 1 of the UQ Centenary website is complete. In the password-protected Staff Resources section, you can become an ambassador for the Centenary by augmenting your email signature as described in this section and by using the new UQ templates that contain the Centenary brand device. More “Did you know?” facts about the UQ are needed – its history, its activities and its contributions to society. If you are able to provide suitable information, please contact the Centenary Secretariat (email: centenary@uq.edu.au). UQ Stories are also being gathered. UQ alumni magazine now online

After 20 years in print, UQ’s alumni magazine Graduate Contact is now online. Designed to complement the twice-yearly print edition, the website includes a range of features including podcasts and vodcasts, "tagging" and the ability for readers to share stories via sites such as Facebook and MySpace. All staff and alumni are encouraged to visit the website and send feedback via an online survey. Hard copies of the Winter 2009 Graduate Contact magazine will start arriving this week.

Applications open for the General Sir John Monash Awards

Up to eight of Australia’s most prestigious postgraduate scholarships promoting excellence in learning are bestowed each year to outstanding Australians graduating from Australian universities to enable them to study abroad at the world’s best universities. Vice-Chancellor’s address to all UQ staff

All staff are invited to attend an open address by Professor Paul Greenfield AO, Vice-Chancellor, from 3.30pm–4.30pm on Tuesday, July 21. The topic will be “2009 and Beyond: Yin and Yang”. The address will include a question-and-answer session. Light refreshments will be provided at each of the venues at the close of the event. The address will be video-linked from the UQ Centre at St Lucia to Herston, Gatton and Ipswich campuses. Please register your intention to attend online.

Current Staff website

Following significant staff consultation, a new Current Staff web page has been developed to provide intuitive access to all the information staff need, in one easy-to-use site. The site is designed to provide a range of important information on the main page and to include the log-ins to the other most frequently used staff sites. NHMRC funds available for swine flu research

The Australian Government, through the National Health and Research Council, will provide $7 million for research into the H1N1 influenza 09 virus (human swine influenza). Expressions of interest close Monday, June 22. Details: online.

Australian Academy of the Humanities funds session

The Academy is seeking input from Australian humanities and arts scholars to help shape a funding program. Discipline Scholars needed

As part of the Australian Learning and Teaching Council’s Learning Networks program, Discipline Scholars are sought across a wide range of areas. Ideally, candidates will be senior academics who have established links across their disciplines with a strong commitment to learning and teaching. Opportunities exist for the roles to be taken up in a part-time capacity. Work is expected to begin in January, 2010, and expressions of interest for these positions close on October 2, 2009. World in Focus photography competition

Run by the School of Political Science and International Studies (POLSIS), the competition aims to engage the UQ community on important political and global issues. Entries opened in March and the closing date for submissions is July 30. The event is open to all UQ students and alumni who are not professional photographers. Winners of the competition will receive a book voucher from the Co-Op Bookshop and have an opportunity to display their work at POLSIS as well as on the school website. Details: online.

Your feline friend can make a difference

Cat owners are invited to have their pets participate in a School of Veterinary Science study seeking an alternative to tablets for easier medication of cats. The study involves at-home administration of three different medication formulations including tablets, oral paste and oral liquid. Owners will be asked to complete questionnaires regarding ease of administration and cats will be re-examined after receiving each preparation for several days. Applications are now open, closing on Tuesday June 30, for the General Staff Self Development Prize 2009 valued at $150. You must have been a UQ staff member for at least three years and be able to demonstrate outstanding achievements in self-development, whether of an academic or non-academic nature. Happy Fridays at Pizza Caffe back on July 3

Due to exams being held in the Holt and Heath rooms, Happy Fridays at the Pizza Caffe will not be happening on June 19 or June 26 but don’t despair pizza lovers – it will be back on July 3 and continue throughout the holidays.

Free music to your ears

Fête de la Musique will be held from 11am–2pm on Sunday, June 21, in the Nickson Room and surrounds and feature a variety of UQ Music chamber ensembles including the Rhythmica percussion trio, Tre Voci vocal group, Dolce trio (violin/viola/flute), Watergate String Quartet, and pianist David Mitchell. The 2nd Degree Bar & Grill in the Union Complex is now screening all the latest sports events around the world. Arts Faculty scholarships for staff

Commonwealth Supported Postgraduate Coursework Scholarships (HECS-HELP) are offered by the faculty each semester to members of staff who have been employed in a full-time continuing appointment/s within the University for at least two years. Cancer Council study scholarships

The Cancer Council Queensland is giving away $50,000 in Seize the Day study scholarships. Any young Queenslander aged 16–21 who has experienced cancer, either personally or in their immediate family is eligible to apply. Details: online.

Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program

The Queensland–Smithsonian Fellowship Program provides fellowships each year to enable Queenslanders to undertake research projects at the Smithsonian Institution, the world's largest museum complex and research organisation. Up to three fellowships will be awarded in 2009. Fellowship duration is 13–26 weeks with a maximum award of $30,000. Applications close at 5pm on Friday, August 14. Details: online.

Applications open for 2010 Fulbright Scholarships

Valued at up to $A50,000, Fulbright scholarships are open to Australian citizens to undertake research or study in the United States for three–12 months. Scholarships can be started between July 1, 2010, and June 30, 2011. Applications are open to postgraduates (to conduct research related to their Australian PhD, or enrol in a US degree); postdoctoral, professional and senior scholars from any field of study. Using the financial crisis as a catalyst for sustainability

The MOSS 2009 Sustainability Series instructs on how to integrate sustainability into your business strategy and workplace culture. A half-day workshop in Brisbane themed “Market Advantage – leadership, ethics, change management and best practice” is ideal for directors and management staff from areas including risk management, operations, HR and environmental services who have an interest in change management and corporate sustainability. Does exercise protect against stress-related diseases?

Basel-based lecturer Dr Markus Gerber, currently on sabbatical leave with the School of Human Movement Studies at UQ, will present the Swiss experience to address the above question at a seminar on Friday, June 19. Dr Gerber will present his findings from an extensive review of literature, and the results from six studies conducted among Swiss adolescents, university students, and police officers. Obama Administration advisor speaks at research seminar

Dr Lesley Russell, Menzies Foundation Fellow at the Menzies Centre for Health Policy, University of Sydney, will speak on “Evidence-based Policy Making” at a Psychiatry Research Seminar, K Floor, Mental Health Centre, Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital at 12.30pm on Friday, June 19. Dr Russell is a Visiting Professor in the Department of Health Policy at George Washington University. Engaging Culture Workshop

The Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies presents a one-day Engaging Culture workshop at the St Lucia campus on Wednesday, June 24. This workshop aims to assist people to increase their awareness of their own cultural identity and how it impacts on their dealings with people from different origins. Winter School in Mathematical & Computational Biology

Hosted by ARC Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Institute for Molecular Bioscience, the 2009 school will be held from July 6–10 in the auditorium, Queensland Bioscience Precinct, St Lucia. The series of winter schools is designed to introduce mathematical and computational biology and bioinformatics to advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students, and researchers in mathematics, IT or science who would like to learn about current problems and opportunities in computational bioscience. ISSR Winter School

Two leading international scholars will join the Institute for Social Science Research, in cooperation with participating schools in the Faculty of Social & Behavioural Sciences, to present two postgraduate workshops (known as Winter Schools) on key research themes in the social sciences. Each International Visiting Fellow will design and conduct one workshop, of five days duration, in the inter-semester break during July 2009. Details: click here.

Graduate Attribute Symposium

This symposium is being held as part of the national dissemination strategy of the ALTC-funded National scoping of graduate attributes project (The National GAP) on July 2. This free symposium offers an opportunity to showcase and discuss graduate attributes practice with teacher and student representatives from a number of Queensland universities . Forum on research and cultural heritage attractions

Special guests, Professors John Falk and Lynn Dierking (Oregon State University), will present some of their recent work, while a UQ School of Tourism team will present findings from recent projects carried out at Sea World, Underwater World, Mon Repos, whale watching, Queensland Museum, Brisbane Botanic Gardens (Mt Coot-tha), and the National Gallery of Victoria. Cultures of violence and conflict explored at conference

UQ’s Cultural History Project will host the 2009 Conference of the International Society for Cultural History. International scholars will address a broad series of questions pertaining to cultures of violence and conflict, highlighted by keynote presentations by Professor Joanna Bourke from Birbeck College, UK, Associate Professor Alice Yang, UC Santa Cruz, and Dr Alastair Blanshard, University of Sydney. Osteoporosis: are you at risk?

2009 Fulbright Symposium
