Current Staff website
Following significant staff consultation, a new Current Staff webpage has been developed to provide intuitive access to all the information staff need, in one easy to use site. The site is designed to provide a range of important information on the main page and to include the log-ins to the other most frequently used staff sites. The login to my.UQ will also be accessible via the new website. Final feedback has now been received and accommodated. This page is expected to be live in operation from today June 1. NHMRC funds available for swine flu research
The Australian Government, through the National Health and Research Council, will provide $7 million for research into the H1N1 influenza 09 virus (human swine influenza). The funds will help researchers learn more about the properties of the virus and its potential to become more virulent and how best to avoid and treat infection. This research will commence in June 2009 with results expected to be reported by December 2009. Expressions of interest close Monday, June 22. Details: online.
Feast for eyes and ears
Distinguished Australian pianist and UQ lecturer Pamela Page will present a special performance of Mussorgsky’s stately Pictures at an Exhibition which will also feature her own paintings influenced by the music. She will also play Beethoven’s poignant Moonlight Sonata. This journey through sound and art will be held from 2pm on Sunday, June 7 in the UQ School of Music’s Nickson Room (Level 4, Zelman Cowen building 51). Enterprising UQ students need sponsorship to compete
A team of 10 undergraduate students from the School of Biomedical Sciences at UQ are keen to compete in iGEM – an international genetic engineering competition this year held in Boston, USA. The team has been working on two viable projects – bacteria that sucks mercury from contaminated water and a bacteria that can cause rain. Glimpse of the future at mobile application design final
COMP3000 team project assessment demos will take place from 4pm on Wednesday, June 3, in building 03–309. They will showcase the iPhone and Android applications they have created this semester. Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program
The Queensland – Smithsonian Fellowship Program provides fellowships each year to enable Queenslanders to undertake research projects at the Smithsonian Institution, the world's largest museum complex and research organisation. Up to three fellowships will be awarded in 2009. Fellowship duration is 13 to 26 weeks with a maximum award of $30,000. Applications close at 5pm on Friday, August 14. Details: online.

Discipline Scholars needed
As part of the Australian Learning and Teaching Council’s Learning Networks program, Discipline Scholars are sought across the following areas: law; science, engineering and technology; architecture and building; business, management and economics; arts, humanities and social sciences; creative and performing arts; health, medicine and veterinary science; and education and human service professions. Ideally, candidates will be senior academics who have established links across their disciplines with a strong commitment to learning and teaching. World in Focus photography competition
Run by the School of Political Science and International Studies (POLSIS), the competition aims to engage the UQ community on important political and global issues. Entries opened in March and the closing date for submissions is July 30. The event is open to all UQ students and alumni who are not professional photographers. Winners of the competition will receive a book voucher from the Co-Op Bookshop and have an opportunity to display their work at POLSIS as well as on the school website. Details: online.
Healthy moggies needed for medication study
Cat owners are invited to have their pets participate in a School of Veterinary Science study seeking an alternative to tablets for easier medication of cats. The study involves at-home administration of three different medication formulations including tablets, oral paste and oral liquid. Owners will be asked to complete questionnaires regarding ease of administration and cats will be re-examined after receiving each preparation for several days. Awards for Excellence in Research Higher Degree Supervision
UQ instituted annual Awards for Excellence in Research Higher Degree Supervision in 2000, making the University one of the first Australian institutions to offer such awards. The awards recognise, encourage and reward sustained excellence in research higher degree supervision, education, mentoring and guidance at the University. Tell us about the best bits about having a baby
The Queensland Centre for Mothers and Babies within the School of Psychology is collecting photos and quotes about the best bits of pregnancy, birth and having a new baby to showcase at the Pregnancy, Children’s & Babies Expo on June 19, 20 and 21. We are encouraging mums, mums-to-be, dads, grandparents, and siblings to contribute so we can represent as many “voices” and experiences as possible. You are invited to send us a brief message about the one thing that you loved most about pregnancy, birth or having a new baby. We would love you to send in a photo that sums up your message, and we’ll use them to make a rolling “slide show” of everyone’s thoughts and photos to share on the day. Holiday Inn Hotel Technology competition

General Staff Self Development Prize 2009
Applications are now open, closing on June 30, for the General Staff Self Development Prize 2009 valued at $150. You must have been a UQ staff member for at least three years and be able to demonstrate outstanding achievements in self-development, whether of an academic or non-academic nature. A written statement addressing the above should be sent to: Confidential, General Staff Self Development Prize, Undergraduate Scholarships and Prizes Office, JD Story Building.
Ensure your postal address is up-to-date
As the end of the 2008–2009 financial year approaches, it is important to check your postal address details are correct for delivery of payment summaries. To do this, log into Employee Self Service (ESS) by using your UQ username and password, click on “Update my contact details” under the option “Quicklinks”. If you wish to change your postal details, click on “Modify” which appears above your home address. Remember to “Save Update” if you do make any changes.

Not for the faint-hearted – scary film at the Schonell
Let the Right One In depicts a friendship between a fragile anxious boy, 12-year-old Oskar, and Eli, also 12, who moves in next door to him with her father. Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson weaves friendship, rejection and loyalty into a disturbing, darkly atmospheric, yet unexpectedly tender tableau of adolescence. The feature is based on the best-selling novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist, which the UK press qualified as “reminiscent of Stephen King at his best”. Details: online.

Queensland Conservation Council celebrates 40th birthday
A series of events is being planned in July including a Gala Benefit Dinner in Brisbane and a special exhibition covering 40 years of conservation in Queensland. UQ staff who have participated in campaigns over the years such as Cooloola National Park, the protection of Fraser Island from sand-mining, designating Cape York a wilderness area, protecting Moreton Bay from fish cages and the proclamation of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park are invited to get involved in the celebrations. Swine flu update
The Director of the University Health Service, Dr Tony Arklay, has prepared an update on swine flu for UQ staff and students here. Practise your English speaking
The Institute of Continuing and TESOL Education is offering Practice English Classes to all adult learners. A 36-hour course costs only $30 if 90 percent of lessons are attended. Does exercise protect against stress-related diseases?
Basel-based lecturer Dr Markus Gerber, currently on sabbatical leave with the School of Human Movement Studies at UQ, will present the Swiss experience in address the above question at a seminar on Friday, June 19. Dr Gerber will present his findings from an extensive review of literature, the results from six studies conduced among Swiss adolescents, university students, and police officers. Winter School in Mathematical & Computational Biology
Hosted by ARC Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Institute for Molecular Bioscience, the 2009 school will be held from July 6–10 in the auditorium, Queensland Bioscience Precinct, St Lucia. The series of winter schools is designed to introduce mathematical and computational biology and bioinformatics to advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students, and researchers in mathematics, IT or science who would like to learn about current problems and opportunities in computational bioscience. ISSR Winter School
Two leading international scholars will join the Institute for Social Science Research, in cooperation with participating schools in the Faculty of Social & Behavioural Sciences, to present two postgraduate workshops (known as Winter Schools) on key research themes in the social sciences. Forum on research and cultural heritage attractions

Cultures of violence and conflict explored at conference
UQ’s Cultural History Project will host the 2009 Conference of the International Society for Cultural History. International scholars will address a broad series of questions pertaining to cultures of violence and conflict, highlighted by keynote presentations by Professor Joanna Bourke from Birbeck College, UK, Associate Professor Alice Yang, UC Santa Cruz, and Dr Alastair Blanshard, University of Sydney.
