Swine flu update
The Director of the University Health Service, Dr Tony Arklay, has prepared an update on swine flu for UQ staff and students here. It provides information on the current situation, prevention steps and advice for travellers. The University will continue to monitor developments and provide updates and advice accordingly.
Chance to attend Harvard University

New Current Staff website
Following significant staff consultation a new Current Staff webpage has been developed to provide intuitive access to all the information staff need in one easy to use site. Current UQ staff are offered a final preview of the new homepage, click here. The site is designed to provide a range of important information on the main page and to include the log-ins to the other most frequently used staff sites. If you have any comments about the new site, in terms of functionality, content and design please send to HR Services via the following brief survey here. The login to my.UQ will also be accessible via the new website. This page is expected to be live in operation from the 1st June. Premier’s Awards for Queensland Seniors

New Executive Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences
Professor Nicholas Fisk will be Executive Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences, as from January 1, 2010. Professor Fisk replaces Professor Peter Brooks, who steps down on June 30 after 11 years as Executive Dean. Professor Sue Tett, currently Deputy Executive Dean and Associate Dean, Research, will be acting Executive Dean for six months from July 1.

Awards for Excellence in Research Higher Degree Supervision
UQ instituted annual Awards for Excellence in Research Higher Degree Supervision in 2000, making the University one of the first Australian institutions to offer such awards. The awards recognise, encourage and reward sustained excellence in research higher degree supervision, education, mentoring and guidance at the University. Each award includes a $10,000 prize, presented at a ceremony in Research Week. Expressions of Interest are invited for the 2009 awards. Please note the following critical dates:

Tell us about the best bits about having a baby
The Queensland Centre for Mothers and Babies within the School of Psychology is collecting photos and quotes about the best bits of pregnancy, birth and having a new baby to showcase at the Pregnancy, Children’s & Babies Expo on June 19, 20 and 21. We are encouraging mums, mums-to-be, dads, grandparents, and siblings to contribute so we can represent as many “voices” and experiences as possible. You are invited to send us a brief message about the one thing that you loved most about pregnancy, birth or having a new baby. We would love you to send in a photo that sums up your message, and we’ll use them to make a rolling “slide show” of everyone’s thoughts and photos to share on the day. Holiday Inn Hotel Technology competition
Students will examine and deliver a proposal to industry on Hotel Technology Systems for a fictitious hotel, “Holiday Inn Virtuoso Brisbane” with the top three teams representing the University at a presentation for Holiday Inn Brisbane General Manager Raymond Faulkner and UQ School of Tourism Industry Partnerships Director Dr David Solnet. If having an international visitor appeals to you, if you live close to public transport and travel to the UQ St Lucia campus takes less than 40 minutes, and you live in an English-speaking household, then ICTE-UQ would like to hear from you. - Journey of Healing Dinner
In order to keep the momentum going following the National Apology to the Stolen Generations by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on February 13, 2008, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit will hold its Journey of Healing Dinner at 6pm for 6.30pm on Friday, May 29. This is an opportunity for UQ staff and students and members of the Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities to come together to acknowledge the spirit of reconciliation. National online survey for same-sex-attracted Australians
Not So Private Lives: The Ins and Outs of Same-Sex Relationships is an anonymous nationwide survey for same-sex-attracted single and partnered Australians. Focusing on several aspects of same-sex relationships, the survey welcomes the participation of people who are at least 18 years of age; are permanent residents or citizens of Australia; and consider themselves to be same-sex-attracted (whether LGBTQ/I or unlabelled). Ensure your postal address is up-to-date
As the end of the 2008–2009 financial year approaches, it is important to check your postal address details are correct for delivery of payment summaries. To do this, log into Employee Self Service (ESS) by using your UQ username and password, click on “Update my contact details” under the option “Quicklinks”. If you wish to change your postal details, click on “Modify” which appears above your home address. Remember to “Save Update” if you do make any changes.

New Schonell film on WWII massacre
Starting on Thursday, May 28, the Schonell Cinema at UQ screens Katyn about the murder of more than 20,000 Polish officers by the Soviet Secret Police during World War II – among them, the director Andrzej Wajda’s father. Nominated for Best Foreign Film at both the recent Academy and Golden Globe awards, the film uses stories from authentic diaries and letters to relate the fate of fictional officers and their families, and through them it shows the predicament of Poland in this true story. The film details a secret deal between Hitler and Stalin to carry out one of the worlds’ most shocking crimes. Details: click here.

Gorilla Girl: remediating Dian Fossey
This Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies lecture presented by Professor Gillian Whitlock recounts her meeting with an aid worker from Goma who gave her a harrowing first-person account of the systematic rape of women and children in the DRC now. Most memorably the aid worker spoke of a community of women struggling to survive near Lake Kivu, “just across the border from where Fossey watched the gorillas”. Engaging Culture Workshop
The Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies presents a one-day Engaging Culture Workshop at the St Lucia campus on Wednesday, June 24. ISSR Winter School

Winter School in Mathematical & Computational Biology
Hosted by ARC Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Institute for Molecular Bioscience, the 2009 school will be held from July 6–10 in the auditorium, Queensland Bioscience Precinct, St Lucia. The series of winter schools is designed to introduce mathematical and computational biology and bioinformatics to advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students, and researchers in mathematics, IT or science who would like to learn about current problems and opportunities in computational bioscience. Cultures of violence and conflict explored at conference
UQ’s Cultural History Project will host the 2009 Conference of the International Society for Cultural History. International scholars will address a broad series of questions pertaining to cultures of violence and conflict, highlighted by keynote presentations by Professor Joanna Bourke from Birbeck College, UK, Associate Professor Alice Yang, UC Santa Cruz, and Dr Alastair Blanshard, University of Sydney.
