The aging of Aquarius: challenges for Aussie housing

From a project initially entitled “The Aging of Aquarius”, Professor Shane Murray of Monash University tracks the changing demographic context of housing in Australia and examines the architects’ role in housing provision. Professor Murray will discuss this work and his own design research at 6pm on Tuesday, May 19, in the Abel Smith Lecture Theatre as part of the UQ “City Thinking: Architecture Talks” program. Awards for Excellence in Research Higher Degree Supervision

UQ instituted annual Awards for Excellence in Research Higher Degree Supervision in 2000, making the University one of the first Australian institutions to offer such awards. The awards recognise, encourage and reward sustained excellence in research higher degree supervision, education, mentoring and guidance at the University. Each award includes a $10,000 prize, presented at a ceremony in Research Week. Expressions of Interest are invited for the 2009 awards. Please note the following critical dates:

General Staff Self Development Prize 2009

Applications are now open, closing on June 30, for the General Staff Self Development Prize 2009 valued at $150. You must have been a UQ staff member for at least three years and be able to demonstrate outstanding achievements in self-development, whether of an academic or non-academic nature. A written statement addressing the above should be sent to: Confidential, General Staff Self Development Prize, Undergraduate Scholarships and Prizes Office, JD Story Building.

Tell us about the best bits about having a baby

The Queensland Centre for Mothers and Babies within the School of Psychology is collecting photos and quotes about the best bits of pregnancy, birth and having a new baby to showcase at the Pregnancy, Children’s & Babies Expo on June 19, 20 and 21. We are encouraging mums, mums-to-be, dads, grandparents, and siblings to contribute so we can represent as many “voices” and experiences as possible. You are invited to send us a brief message about the one thing that you loved most about pregnancy, birth or having a new baby. We would love you to send in a photo that sums up your message, and we’ll use them to make a rolling “slide show” of everyone’s thoughts and photos to share on the day. Holiday Inn Hotel Technology competition

Students will examine and deliver a proposal to industry on Hotel Technology Systems for a fictitious hotel, “Holiday Inn Virtuoso Brisbane” with the top three teams representing the University at a presentation for Holiday Inn Brisbane General Manager Raymond Faulkner and UQ School of Tourism Industry Partnerships Director Dr David Solnet. If having an international visitor appeals to you, if you live close to public transport and travel to the UQ St Lucia campus takes less than 40 minutes, and you live in an English-speaking household, then ICTE-UQ would like to hear from you. We are particularly interested in families who are able to host male students or Muslim students.   • Economic effects of migration
    Have you ever wondered how migrants earning money in Australia could affect the economies of their home nations? Walk in another’s shoes and consider migrant issues from another perspective.   • Journey of Healing Dinner
    In order to keep the momentum going following the National Apology to the Stolen Generations by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on February 13, 2008, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit will hold its Journey of Healing Dinner at 6pm for 6.30pm on Friday, May 29. This is an opportunity for UQ staff and students and members of the Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities to come together to acknowledge the spirit of reconciliation. National online survey for same-sex-attracted Australians

Not So Private Lives: The Ins and Outs of Same-Sex Relationships is an anonymous nationwide survey for same-sex-attracted single and partnered Australians. Focusing on several aspects of same-sex relationships, the survey welcomes the participation of people who are at least 18 years of age; are permanent residents or citizens of Australia; and consider themselves to be same-sex-attracted (whether LGBTQ/I or unlabelled). In recent months there has been growing interest in, and demand for the use of email as a mechanism for sending announcements, information and notices. ITS provides a number of ways that staff at all levels of the University can create and manage distribution lists. Details: here.

Bronwyn’s back from OS to organise Brisbane

Claymation triumph

Mary and Max has started screening at the Schonell Cinemas and is the latest feature film from Adam Elliot who won an Oscar for his short film Harvey Krumpet. Narrated by Barry Humphries and five years in the making, Mary and Max is an insightful film with loneliness at its core. It covers 20 years of a pen-pal friendship between Mary Daisy Dinkle – voiced by Bethany Whitmore as a child and Toni Collette as an adult, and Max – voiced by Philip Seymour Hoffman – a New Yorker with problems relating to people. Madness and isolation explored

Join the enthusiastic UQ Drama students as they explore and challenge notions of patriarchy, madness, and isolation with their exciting new production of Louis Nowra’s Inside the Island. Sports Specialty Clinic

The UQ Musculoskeletal and Sports Injury clinic offers a Sports Speciality Clinic in conjunction with Postgraduate Sports Physiotherapy program. No referral necessary. Swine flu – keep informed

The World Health Organization last week raised the pandemic flu alert level from 3 to 5. The University regards the health and welfare of its staff and students as a key priority and has put a comprehensive plan in place.

Last chances for a flu jab

Another session has been arranged for the Staff Flu Vaccination Program. Free vaccinations are offered to continuing and fixed-term contract staff. The next session on Wednesday, May 20, will be held in the Boardroom, UQ Centre from 8.30am–3pm. The following session is in the VIP room (next door to the Boardroom, UQ Centre) on Tuesday, June 2. Practise your English speaking

The Institute of Continuing and TESOL Education is offering Practice English Classes to all adult learners. A 36-hour course costs only $30 if 90 percent of lessons are attended. Defence talk: Power and purpose in the Asian century

The School of Political Science and International Studies is pleased to present a Q & A panel discussion on the Australian Defence White Paper released earlier this month. A panel of UQ experts will debate its merits and explore the broader implications for the maintenance of regional peace and security. The UQ community and general public will have an opportunity to hear from UQ’s Rotary World Peace Fellows as they share their practical experiences of peace-building around the globe at this year’s RWPF Seminar (formerly known as the Paul Harris Seminar) to be held from 9am–5pm on Saturday, May 23, in the Sir Llew Edwards building (formerly GPN 4). The School of Social Work and Human Services and The Social Policy Unit present a talk by Rachael Dobson of the Department of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Leeds, on the relevance of organisational settings for housing-related support from a UK homelessness context. Gorilla Girl: remediating Dian Fossey

This Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies lecture presented by Professor Gillian Whitlock recounts her meeting with an aid worker from Goma who gave her a harrowing first-person account of the systematic rape of women and children in the DRC now. Most memorably the aid worker spoke of a community of women struggling to survive near Lake Kivu, “just across the border from where Fossey watched the gorillas”. Engaging Culture Workshop

The Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies presents a one-day Engaging Culture Wworkshop at the St Lucia campus on Wednesday, June 24. This workshop aims to assist people to increase their awareness of their own cultural identitiesand how it impacts on their dealings with people from different origins. Cultures of violence and conflict explored at conference

UQ’s Cultural History Project will host the 2009 Conference of the International Society for Cultural History. International scholars will address a broad series of questions pertaining to cultures of violence and conflict, highlighted by keynote presentations by Professor Joanna Bourke from Birbeck College, UK, Associate Professor Alice Yang, UC Santa Cruz, and Dr Alastair Blanshard, University of Sydney.
