This breakfast seminar on Thursday, May 14, aims to explore the short-term future of the Australian economy and labour market based on advice from a panel of experts, including prominent and respected economist and social commentator, Professor John Quiggin. ICTE-UQ is looking for homestay families

If having an international visitor appeals to you, if you live close to public transport and travel to the UQ St Lucia campus takes less than 40 minutes, and you live in an English-speaking household, then ICTE-UQ would like to hear from you. We are particularly interested in families who are able to host male students or Muslim students. In Others' Shoes: Is peace possible?

Hear from four Rotary World Peace Fellows (David LaMotte – USA, Tamara Turcan – Moldova, Marcos Zunino – Argentina, and Lydia Bulmer – Wales) as they discuss their experiences as peacemakers and uncover the passion and drive behind their chosen path. Proudly presented by the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences and the School of Political Science and International Studies as part of Diversity Week. World Environment Day breakfast

Fulbright Scholarship presentation

Dr Joe Hlubucek, Executive Director of the Australian-American Fulbright Commission will give a presentation for honours students, RHD candidates and academics who are interested in study or research in the United States from 10am–11am, Thursday, May 14, in the Library Conference Room, ground floor SS&H Library, Duhig Building, St Lucia campus. Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science extension

Economic effects of migration

Have you ever wondered how migrants earning money in Australia could affect the economies of their home nations? Walk in another’s shoes and consider migrant issues from another perspective. The Faculty of Business, Economics and Law, in support of UQ’s Diversity Week, invites you to attend: “Trading places: economic impacts of migration on those left behind” – a seminar presented by Associate Professor Richard Brown, from 2pm–3.30pm on Tuesday, May 26, in the Parnell Building Room 222. Adventurous volunteers for indigenous pilgrimage

The Drumley Walk travels from Beaudesert to Southport in the footsteps of Aboriginal community leader, Billy Drumley (1853–1951) through farms, forests and roads. Sir Llew honoured in UQ landmark

A new $54 million building has become the Sir Llew Edwards Building in honour of our recently retired Chancellor. UQ’s governing Senate rebadged General Purpose North 4 in recognition of Sir Llew’s highly distinguished service as a member of Senate for almost 25 years, including nearly 16 years as Chancellor. The building, officially opened in July 2008, includes a world-first Advanced Concept Teaching Space, a collaborative teaching and learning space, and the Institute for Continuing and TESOL Education (ICTE-UQ).

Queensland Premier’s Literary Awards close soon

Entries close on Monday, May 25, for these awards offering total prize money of $225,000 across 14 categories including poetry, short stories, non-fiction, unpublished Indigenous writer, science writing, film, drama and TV script-writing. Details: online.

Using email distribution lists

In recent months there has been growing interest in, and demand for the use of email as a mechanism for sending announcements, information and notices. ITS provides a number of ways that staff at all levels of the University can create and manage distribution lists. Details: here.

Do you need MATLAB or DRAGON NATURALLYSPEAKING software?

Information Technology Services (ITS) is gauging demand for MATLAB and Nuance’s Dragon NaturallySpeaking products for staff. ITS needs to collect information from current and prospective users of these software products to determine whether site-wide licences and volume licence pricing would be beneficial to UQ staff. Have your say by completing the following short surveys:

Australian Graduate Survey

The Australian Graduate Survey is now available to all graduates who completed their qualification in 2008. To complete the survey, graduates should go online and enter their survey form identifier (supplied in previous correspondence). Each graduate who completes the survey will be entered into a prize draw with the chance of winning one of 25 cash prizes valued at either $1000 or $500. Details: email: uqgdsgen@uq.edu.au.

BEL postgraduate scholarships for staff closing soon

The BEL Faculty is offering Commonwealth Supported Postgraduate Scholarships to general staff employed in full-time continuing appointment/s for at least two years. Applicants must apply separately for admission to one of the Faculty’s postgraduate coursework programs and provide evidence they have been admitted to a relevant program. Journey of Healing Dinner

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit will hold its Journey of Healing Dinner at 6pm for 6.30pm on Friday, May 29. This is an opportunity for UQ staff and students and members of the Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities to come together to acknowledge the spirit of reconciliation. The UQ Musculoskeletal and Sports Injury clinic offers a Sports Speciality Clinic in conjunction with Postgraduate Sports Physiotherapy program. No referral necessary. The World Health Organization last week raised the pandemic flu alert level from 3 to 5. The University regards the health and welfare of its staff and students as a key priority and has put a comprehensive plan in place.

Fresh, sustainable food at your fingertips

Ecobug, the UQ Food Cooperative, is planning to become a Food Connect partner and offer a place to receive weekly boxes of fresh, nutritious and affordable fruit & veg. Last chances for a flu jab

Another session has been arranged for the Staff Flu Vaccination Program. Free vaccinations are offered to continuing and fixed-term contract staff. The Employee Assistance Program is a confidential and voluntary counselling service provided to all UQ employees and their immediate families. The EAP aims to assist with the resolution of personal and work-related problems that may affect work performance or quality of life. Practise your English speaking

The Institute of Continuing and TESOL Education is offering Practice English Classes to all adult learners. A 36-hour course costs only $30 if 90 percent of lessons are attended. In this free public seminar, School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies lecturer, Dr Joe Hardwick, will explore why the streets of Paris, more than any other developed-world city have consistently attracted the attention of filmmakers. Jay Hall archaeology lecture

Initiated in 2007, the Jay Hall lecture is an annual celebration of archaeology, which opens Queensland’s National Archaeology Week Program. The lecture is named in honour of Associate Professor Jay Hall, the first appointed archaeologist at UQ, who retired in 2007. This year’s speaker is Professor Peter Hiscock from the School of Archaeology and Anthropology at the Australian National University, Canberra. Rotary World Peace Fellows’ Seminar 2009

The UQ community and general public will have an opportunity to hear from UQ’s Rotary World Peace Fellows as they share their practical experiences of peace-building around the globe at this year’s RWPF Seminar (formerly known as the Paul Harris Seminar) to be held from 9am–5pm on Saturday, May 23, in the Sir Llew Edwards building (formerly GPN 4). Cultures of violence and conflict explored at conference

UQ’s Cultural History Project will host the 2009 Conference of the International Society for Cultural History. International scholars will address a broad series of questions pertaining to cultures of violence and conflict, highlighted by key note presentations by Professor Joanna Bourke from Birbeck College, UK, Associate Professor Alice Yang, UC Santa Cruz, and Dr Alastair Blanshard, University of Sydney.
