Principals’ forum success

Approximately 60 high school principals from Brisbane, Ipswich and the Gold Coast attended a forum hosted by the Vice-Chancellor at St Lucia on Tuesday, March 31. Guest speaker Emeritus Professor Denise Bradley, lead author of the Review of Australian Higher Education, offered advice on how universities and high schools could work together to achieve the best outcomes for students. UQ will be meeting with schools in regional locations, including Toowoomba, Cairns and the Sunshine Coast, over the next few months. To read the full story, click here.

Free Australian Securities Exchange seminars

The Australian Securities Exchange will bring two free roadshows to Brisbane – “Flexible Investments for Enhancing Income and Capital Growth – ASX Instalment Warrants” (May 6) and “Protecting Shares and Enhancing Income – ASX Options” (May 7) to be held at the Regus Auditorium, Level 5, Riverside Centre, 123 Eagle Street in the city. Grace College photo mystery

In 2010, Grace College will celebrate its 40th anniversary and in preparation for that is trying to track down a few missing College photos. If anyone has a Grace College photo for any of these years – 1987, 1988, 1992 and 1993 – could you please contact the Principal Dr Sue Fairley on sfairley@uq.edu.au or 3842 4002.

University Small Animal Clinic

The Vet School is moving to Gatton in 2010 but the Small Animal Clinic will remain at the St Lucia campus. UQ staff and students receive a five percent discount, and free boarding on the day of your appointment if you want to pick up your pet after work or lectures. Appointments: ext. 52110.

Nominations for 2009 Riverprize open

The prestigious National and International Riverprize awards for excellence in river and catchment management are open to organisations around the world involved in the restoration and sustainable management of our precious water resources. This year, the national prize is worth $200,000, and the International Thiess Riverprize $350,000. Nominations for both close Thursday, April 30. Details: click here.

Housekeeping matters

Anzac Day – no Monday public holiday this year

This year, Anzac Day (April 25) falls on a Saturday and the State Government has not allocated a substitute public holiday on the following Monday which many people anticipate and which is showing on some desk calendars around the campuses.

Multiple choice exam service transferred

The MCQ (Multiple Choice Question) Exam Marking service offered by ITS has been transferred to the UQconnect Service Centre team located on the lower level of the Union Complex, next to the 2nd Degree bar (formerly the Red Room). New teaching-focused staff grant forms, guidelines

Two staff grant schemes have been introduced in 2009, aiming to provide resources to teaching-focused staff to assist them to build a profile in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). Guidelines and application forms are now available for the New Staff Start-Up (SoTL) and Early Career (SoTL) schemes by clicking here.

Full of life and live on stage

Somerset Mills productions present their premier performance of PRODIGAL – four one-act plays about embracing the fall, and finding your way home from April 21–April 25 at the Cement Box Theatre at the Schonell complex. This performance also features visual art for sale, poetry and live music from Brisbane’s hottest independent local artists in the foyer every night. Cost: $12. Group booking discounts for “the Scottish play”

Calm yourself down

Intern clinical psychologists at the UQ Psychology Clinic are offering a brief introduction to mindfulness training. The program introduces concepts including: being aware in the present, mindful breathing, body awareness, and mindfulness in everyday life. The training is suitable for anyone interested in learning more about mindfulness. Groups will be conducted over four weeks starting on Monday, April 20. Last date for sign-up is Friday, April 17. Treatment for people post-cancer or with Type 2 diabetes

A free eight-week light exercise program is being offered by the School of Human Movement Studies and UQ SPORT’s Inter-Professional Clinics. If you are post-cancer treatment or suffer from type 2 diabetes and are sick and tired of feeling sick and tired, then take this step towards boosting your quality of life. The program begins on Tuesday, April 21, with hourly sessions running at 1pm and 3pm. Details: clinics@uqsport.uq.edu.au or 3346 3241.

Genius of Warhol explored

Frances E. Willard Professor of Screen Cultures in the School of Communications at Northwestern University, USA, Professor Lynn Spigel, will discuss Andy Warhol's career in US commercial television from the 1950s to his cable access and MTV programs in the 1980s at the next Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies lecture to be held at 5.30pm on Thursday, April 16, at the UQ Art Museum. Excellence in service delivery

This half-day course is for administrative staff who support students, and is particularly relevant for front-counter staff. It is an ATEM (Association for Tertiary Education Management) course and costs $200 per person ($180 if you’re an ATEM member). It will be held from 9am–1pm on Thursday, April 16. Social workers and climate change

The School of Social Work and Human Services has teamed up again with the Australian Association of Social Workers (QLD), and UQ’s Social Work and Human Services Alumni to present the 5th Annual Jenny Morrison Memorial Lecture at 5.45pm on Wednesday, May 6, at Women’s College, St Lucia campus. This year's lecture entitled “Social Work and Climate Change: challenges and contributions”, will feature a panel discussion led by Mr Andrew Bartlett MC – a well known champion of social justice and environmental issues and contributor to Australian public policy debate – and three social workers actively engaged in the climate change issue. Whiplash whipped into shape

People with whiplash, their families and healthcare professionals are invited to a free hypothetical seminar. Physiotherapy, chiropractic, spinal surgery, psychology, occupational and art therapy experts will come together for the latest understanding of chronic whiplash disorder and what can be done to optimise quality of life. Search/Match Workshop for SI-net users

A SI-net Search/Match workshop will be held from 10am–noon on Thursday, April 23, in the Senate Room. The purpose of the workshop is to explain Search/Match so duplicate ID issues can be managed more efficiently. Enrolment for this workshop is not necessary. Where possible, all SI-net users who add new people to SI-net should attend the workshop. Additional Search/Match functions will be discussed and the current Search/Match method will be revised.

ISSR Winter School Workshops

Two leading international scholars will join the Institute for Social Science Research, in cooperation with participating Schools in the Faculty of Social & Behavioural Sciences, to present two postgraduate workshops (known as Winter Schools) on key research themes in the social sciences. Each International Visiting Fellow will design and conduct one workshop, of five days duration, in the inter-semester break during July 2009. Details: click here.

Practical ethics seminar: a lawyer’s duties to the courts

The UQ Law Graduates Association is proud to host this one-hour seminar by His Honour Judge Searles at UQ Downtown premises, Level 19 Central Plaza One, 345 Queen Street, Brisbane, at 6pm on Wednesday, April 29. Conference on telehealth successes and failures

The Centre for Online Health (UQ) invites participants from the health research and ICT industries for the 2009 International Conference on Successes and Failures in Telehealth at the RBWH Education Centre on November 10–11. A Call for Abstracts has recently been announced. Contributions are invited from all areas of telemedicine, telehealth and e-health, including clinical, educational and administrative applications.
