The latest

Heron Island re-opening

The Heron Island Research Station was officially re-opened on Friday, February 20, by the Queensland Minister for Education, Training and the Arts, Rod Welford. The event celebrated the success of a $9 million construction program that followed the fire of March, 2007. To read full story, click here.

Volunteers needed for animal ethics committees

The University urgently requires Category C members to participate in animal ethics committees. These committees are responsible for ensuring the humane care of animals used for scientific purposes. A Category C member is a person not associated with the University in any way, not involved in the care and use of animals for scientific purposes, but with a demonstrable commitment to and experience in furthering the welfare of animals. Win $1000 in Diversity design contest

The $1000 artwork design competition for Diversity Week 2009 (May 25–29) is open to current staff and students (except staff from the Office of Marketing and Communications and The Equity office). Designs should link to this year’s Diversity Week theme, “In Others’ Shoes”. This theme encourages the University community to “walk in the shoes” of someone from a different background, with alternate attributes, abilities, religious beliefs, from another culture, in an opposing gender or from a different generation. Orientation Week

Orientation Week (February 23–27) is an important part of the transition to University for new students. A highlight of the week is Wednesday’s free Market Day where students can enjoy live entertainment, giveaways, countless stalls, demonstrations and other fun festivities. Details: click here.

UQ involved in GP Super Clinic

The University of Queensland will contribute $1.7 million towards a GP Super Clinic to be established at Redcliffe. The Federal Government has announced it will contribute up to $5 million towards the Redcliffe GP Super Clinic. To read full story, click here.

UniFIT survey

UQ SPORT is seeking your views on the staff fitness program UniFIT with the aim of providing a better customer experience. Library innovations save students’ time

UQ students need no longer wonder whether a computer will be free at the Library – they can simply check a monitor or head online in advance. With the use of real-time technology, UQ Library users can now see the total number and location of computers in each branch and find out which ones are free at that moment. Read full story here.

Nominate an outstanding Queenslander

Nominations are now open for the 2009 Suncorp Queenslander of the Year and Suncorp Young Queenslander of the Year awards and the 2009 Queensland Greats Awards. Entries for both sets of awards close at 5pm, on Friday, March 20.

Property & Facilities Division review

2009 Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science

The Australian Government awards five prizes annually for outstanding scientific achievements and excellence in science teaching. Each award includes grants worth $500,000 and entries close May 8. Self-nominations will not be considered. Details: here.

The Intercampus Bus Schedule for first semester 2009 (valid from Monday, February 23) is available on the P & F website.

Road closures

  • The Big O concert, Natural Amphitheatre, Saturday, February 28. Road closures on Friday, February 27, (the day prior) from 6am until 3pm, and from 6am until midnight on the day of the concert.
  • Twilight Fun Run, UQ Running Track, Sunday, April 5. Road closures will be in place from 2pm until 9pm on the day.

AUQA Audit 2009

The University of Queensland is currently being audited by the Australian Universities Quality Agency (AUQA). The audit process has commenced and preparation has started for the site visit by the AUQA audit panel from March 30 to April 2, 2009. Details: c.tate@uq.edu.au  or e.juhasz@uq.edu.au.

The blood donormobile will be visiting the Student Union Plaza from 9am until 4pm daily, Monday, March 2, until Wednesday, March 11. To make an appointment, please call 3889 7333 prior to the visit or 0413 055 371 on the days. Every blood donation can save up to three lives.

Computer security Q&A

Public lecture puts TV under microscope

The Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies will hold its annual commemorative Henry Mayer Lecture at 5.30pm on Thursday, March 12 in the UQ Art Museum. Professor Ien Ang from the University of Western Sydney will discuss the evolution of television. Details: 3346 7407.
