ALTC grants call for submissions
The Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) will soon be accepting expressions of interest and full proposals for their remaining 2009 Grants Scheme programs. Funding from $80,000–$220,000 is available across two programs. Due dates for consideration by the review committee is Friday, February 20. Details: Majella Card at m.card@uq.edu.au. Retirement of the Executive Dean, Health Sciences
Professor Peter Brooks, Executive Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences has advised he will step down from his role on June 30. UQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Greenfield said Professor Brooks had championed the model of inter-professional learning and research across the health disciplines as well as successfully employed his considerable entrepreneurial skills to harvest opportunities for schools within the Faculty to apply their professional expertise for the benefit of the broader community, locally and globally. Professor Sue Tett, currently Deputy Executive Dean and Associate Dean, Research, will act in the role from July 1 until a new Dean takes up appointment.
Property & Facilities Division review
Staff members are invited to make a submission to the review of the Property and Facilities Division, which will be conducted during the period of April 28–May 1, 2009. The terms of reference for the review can be obtained by contacting the Review Coordinator, Secretariat Services, on ext. 51321 or email m.kancachian@admin.uq.edu.au. Submissions addressing all, or any of, the terms of reference should be sent to the Review Coordinator, Secretariat Services, Level 6, J.D. Story Building, by Tuesday, April 7, 2009.
Computer security Q&A
All academic and general staff are encouraged to attend a lunchtime question-and-answer seminar on the subject of Healthy, Secure and Sustainable Computing at UQ. The session is an opportunity to hear from, and ask questions of, AusCERT (Australian Computer Emergency Response Team) and UQ’s Incident Response Team. Prizes for the best question. The seminar will be held from noon until 1pm on Thursday, February 26, in room 216, Prentice Building (building 42).
Higher Education Equity Program (HEESP)
Applications are called for funding to support student equity initiatives through the 2009 Higher Education Equity Program (HEESP). Details and application forms are available from the Equity Office. Senate committee vacancies
Expressions of interest are invited for the following vacancies on the Senate Committee for Equity, Diversity and The Status of Women: Chair, Gender Equity Subcommittee (GESC); Chair, Cultural and Linguistic Diversity, and Indigenous Australians Subcommittee (CALDIA); and representatives of the parent Committee on each of its three subcommittees, (Disability, CALDIA, GESC). New print facilities for course notes
The Print on Demand (pod) centre in the UQ Bookshop has installed a new range of print facilities for producing course notes and other staff and student print requirements at UQ. Copyright checking, distribution through the bookshop, archiving for re-use, re-prints on demand, and provision of deposit copies for the UQ Library, are all standard features of the pod's enhanced course note service. Staff influenza vaccination program
Free flu vaccination will be offered to full-time and part-time staff but not casual staff or students from Tuesday, March 17. The program at St Lucia campus will be held at the Boardroom, UQ Centre and will be run from 8:30am to 3pm from March 17 until May 20. To book or for more details, click here. Gatton and Ipswich campus staff should contact their local health services after March 17 to check when the vaccine is available. Flu vaccination will be offered at JKMRC and the Dental School on Wednesday, April 1; the Mayne Medical School at Herston on Thursday April 2, and Princess Alexandra Hospital on Tuesday, April 7. Appointments for these sites will be available in March.
Donate blood in March
The Australian Red Cross Blood Service mobile van will be on the St Lucia campus in the Student Union Plaza between Monday, March 2, and Friday, March 6.

Nominations open for 2009 Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science
The Australian Government awards five prizes annually for outstanding scientific achievements and excellence in science teaching. Each award includes grants worth $500,000 and entries close May 8. Self-nominations not considered. Details here.
Get onboard the Q150 Train
To help Queensland celebrate its 150th year, UQ is sponsoring a heritage-listed steam train which will travel to more than 30 communities between April and August this year (see the Q150 website). Housekeeping matters
No more "dustbowl"
The Keith Street carpark was re-opened on Wednesday, February 11, following a major refurbishment project to provide a sealed surface, clear linemarking, good lighting, and strategically placed litter bins. The carpark operates on a pay & display basis that provides all-day parking for $3.
Road closures for concert
The Big O concert, expected to attract 5000 people, is taking place on Saturday, February 28, at the Natural Amphitheatre. There are two road closures associated with this event. The first will take place on February 27, the day prior from 6am until 3pm, while the second will take place from 6am until midnight on the day of the concert. There will be two road closure points on each day. The first will be located at the start of Jocks Road at Staff House Road end, and the second road closure across Staff House Road, near the Credit Union Hut/TEDI building. Details: ext. 56003.
AUQA Audit 2009
The University of Queensland is currently being audited by the Australian Universities Quality Agency (AUQA). The audit process has commenced and preparation has started for the site visit by the AUQA audit panel from March 30 to April 2, 2009. Details: c.tate@uq.edu.au or e.juhasz@uq.edu.au.

Reflexive Methodology
Over two half-days, Visiting Professor Mats Alvesson (University of Lund, Sweden) will deliver a workshop designed to develop the qualitative research skills of PhD students and early-career academics. The workshop on Thursday, February 19, and Friday, February 20, from 9am until noon in room 103 and 106 respectively in the Colin Clark building is free but there are a maximum of 25 participants.
