Personal
safety tips for motorists
On the
road
- Park in well-lit areas near your destination.
- Always lock your car when leaving it, even for a short time.
- Approach your car with keys in hand for quick access - and be
prepared to use them to jab an attacker.
- Check the back seat or hatch for intruders.
- Once in your car, keep all windows and doors locked.
- Move your car closer if you plan to be on campus after dark.
You can "upgrade" your parking from green permit to
blue or red areas after 3:45pm. Parking is free in the multi-level
carparks after 5pm and deregulated in all areas after 6:30pm.
- If your car is "playing up", try to stop in a service
station, populated or well-lit spot.
- If you have a flat tyre, think about driving slowly to a safe
stopping place. This could damage the tyre further and possibly
the wheel rim - but it may be better than compromising your safety.
- Be aware of your surroundings - make mental notes of street
names and landmarks.
- If you think you are being followed, drive to a populated area
or service station and ask for assistance. Don't drive home, particularly
if you live alone, and if the supposed following vehicle drives
past you after you have stopped be aware it may be waiting for
you further down the road.
- If a passing motorist indicates you should stop, keep driving
to a service station or populated area before checking your vehicle.
If you decide to stop, stay in the car with doors locked, engine
running and the window only partly open to speak through. Drive
away if you feel threatened.
- If stopped by police not in uniform and in an unmarked car,
ask to see identification before getting out of your car.
- If someone does jump into your car, think of ways to attract
attention - eg. drive with the horn on, flashing headlights and
hazard lights, and/or stop in the middle of a busy intersection
and throw the keys out of the window.
- If worried about your car's performance, get someone you know
and trust who is going your way to follow you until you reach
a safe place, or arrange with someone to come looking for you
if you don't reach your destination at a set time.
- Never leave valuables in sight in your vehicle.
- Never put personal identification on the keyring.
