Significance of the Building

The buildings of Union College, designed by architect James Birrell, represent the cutting edge of international architectural ideas of the early 1960's. With its heritage listing in 2004 Union College is one of the most architecturally significant buildings on the University of Queensland, St Lucia campus.

Facilities

College rooms are equipped with desks large enough to comfortably support your drawing board. Use the college photocopier to rescale and reproduce your drawings for presentation, 24 hours a day.

Access and Opportunity

Union College is only a short walk from the architecture studios in the Zelman Cowen Building. Discuss your design ideas and architectural theories with other architecture students who have decided to call Union College 'home'.

About Jim Birrell

James Birrell was the University Architect from 1961-1966. During this period he designed a number of buildings which are still in use on the University's campus. In 2005 Birrell was awarded the Royal Australian Institute of Architects highest accolade, the RAIA Gold Medal.

The hectic lifestyle of post graduate students is well catered to at Union College. 24 hour access to computer facilities and high quality printers allow you to make last minute edits of your work with ease, even in the event of your own equipment failure. The College's recreation areas allow for brief, yet well deserved study breaks, with friends without needing to travel great distances.
