Volunteering is a powerful force for change, both for those who volunteer and for the wider community. As a UQ student, you can access a broad range of volunteering opportunities coordinated by UQ or external organisations.

Please note that while a range of volunteering opportunities are highlighted below, to be counted towards the UQ Advantage Award, student participation must be funded by a UQ Advantage Grant or faculty/school funding or the program coordinated by The University of Queensland. Please contact the Office of Undergraduate Education if you have any questions.

AIME provides a dynamic educational Program that gives Indigenous high school students the skills, opportunities, belief and confidence to finish school at the same rate as their peers. AIME has proven to dramatically improve the chances of Indigenous kids finishing school. AIME also connects students with post Year 12 opportunities, including further education and employment.

Across the country, AIME delivers a range of different programs. The Core Program targets local Indigenous high school students who attend schools that are able to visit the UQ campus on a weekly basis. The Outreach Program extends the AIME experience to Indigenous high school students from further afield through a more intensive full day format. Learn more and become a mentor today.

AYAD is an initiative of the Australian Government that places skilled young Australian volunteers in developing countries throughout the Asia Pacific region for 3-12 months. You could be working in a broad range of areas that include health, environment, education, justice and infrastructure development.

Challenges Abroad offers students a range of overseas volunteer programs. Our Challenges take participants outside their comfort zone, providing them opportunities to live and work in a different culture while helping make a difference to local communities.

Challenges are designed for people looking for more than leisure travel or backpacking: they are for travelers looking to expand their horizons and gain real life experiences. We offer structured programs overseas, with 24/7 in-country support, to enable our participants to make the most of their time abroad and gain from their experience. Programs include:

Childrens activity Leader Cambodia
Volunteer in Cambodia and organise extra-curricular activities with children at local NGOs. Bring education and fun and make a real difference in children’s lives. You will be working with a centre for children who have either dropped out of mainstream education or are not able to cope with the pressures of the education system and need additional help and support to manage. These children all come from extremely poor backgrounds and are unable to get any educational support at home.

Teach and Care for Children- India, Nepal & Cambodia
Our childcare volunteer projects are ideal for anyone wanting to use their time to help underprivileged children overseas. HIV and poverty in the developing world mean that many children are orphaned or neglected. Our nursery, care home and orphanage volunteer projects aim to help these children and bring joy to their lives. Those taking part in gap year childcare volunteering can teach English, play games and care for disadvantaged children as part of a rewarding gap year abroad.

Community Aid Alliance (CAA) is a non-profit development support organization established for the purpose of promoting and facilitating community based organizations and activities.  

CAA can offer the experience of a lifetime to those looking to volunteer their time and skills to help the community organisations that CAA works with, through its Linking and Learning program. Volunteers will be involved in the day to day running of Community Aid Alliance’s resource centres including marketing, communication, research, documentation, administration, idea generation and teaching (dependent on skills of volunteers).

Volunteers need to cover their travel, food and field based accommodation. In some cases the host organisations may pay for part or full living cost of the volunteer depending on the expertise and relevant service provided to the host organisation.

Conservation Volunteers Australia organises practical conservation projects to protect and enhance the Australian environment. They run projects around Queensland regularly to which you can go along for a day or up to a couple of weeks.

The World Conservation Program from Conservation Volunteers give you the opportunity to volunteer overseas on conservation and cultural projects in an environment that is very different to Australia. Projects run for two to five weeks. Program fees apply.

Down Syndrome Association of Queensland (DSAQ) is looking for MALE volunteers to participate in their youth camps this year.

Volunteers will be assigned a small group of campers, who will be people with Down syndrome aged 16+. The role will involve supporting these campers to participate in the weekend's activities, which is a LOT of fun!
The camps in 2013are: 21-24 June and 4-7 October.

InsightArgentina offers students exciting and worthwhile opportunities for internships, years abroad, gap years and summer vacations, as individuals or groups and the opportunity to enjoy a unique experience living in Argentina.

Founded in 2004, OzHarvest is a non-denominational charity that rescues excess food which would otherwise be discarded. OzHarvest Brisbane is calling for applications for Food Rescue Volunteers, who provide support to OzHarvest Transport Drivers in the collection of food which being donated by businesses in the Brisbane CBD area and to redistribute food to areas of need.

Required skills or attributes;

  • To be available on a Wednesday or Friday between 3pm and 6pm once a month
  • To undertake a national police check
  • Have personable can do attitude with a desire to make a difference!
  • Undertake a 1:1 induction session with volunteer coordinator

Palms Australia organises volunteering projects worldwide and places volunteers in positions suitable to their skills. Palms Australia arranges accommodation, a basic living allowance and return travel for their volunteers.

PDH opened its doors to international volunteers in 2001 and since then PDH has received and worked with 114 volunteers from many countries. Togo is a French speaking country and most of the work at PDH is conducted in French. There is no minimum language requirement, however, and PDH is happy to have students who only speak very basic French.

Most opportunities for volunteering with Queensland Government Volunteering occur in the Department of Environment and Resource Management’s Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, while opportunities in other divisions

The QPASTT Homework Club supports high school students and some tertiary students between 12 and 24 years old. They rely on volunteer tutors to support students in understanding, researching and completing their homework (but not doing work for students). You can tutor in any subject/s you feel comfortable with. Tutors volunteer 2 hours for one or more afternoons a week at QPASTT either Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday between 3:30 and 5:30.

Reef Check Australia is a not-for-profit environmental organisation that engages the Australian community in coral reef conservation at a unique level. We are part of a global network of volunteers who regularly monitor and report on reef health, bringing Citizen Science to environmental issues. Reef Check Australia regularly offers opportunities for students and professionals to further develop and/or apply their skills by signing on for a Volunteer Placement opportunity.

Established by the Brisbane Sisters of Mercy, the Romero Centre is an inter-faith organisation committed to social justice. Volunteers perform all kinds of tasks to help the Centre achieve its goal, and they do their best to match your abilities, skills and qualifications, within which you may like to gain some experience, with the tasks you do. Some examples of volunteer roles are: casework support, advocacy referral assistance, accommodation support, women’s group activities including cooking, yoga and sewing, project work, child-minding, administration, and tutoring.

Sports for Sharing is a civic educational program whose main objective is to raise youth awareness about the 8 United Nations Millennium Goals (MDG) through playground games and physical activity while stimulating interest in and appreciation for the vast cultural diversity in Mexico.

Mentoring @ UQ

What: A mentoring program for first year students at UQ

More: Students are mentored by a 2nd year or above peer student and are involved in a number of programs including the Jump Start Academic Preparation Program and Thrive@UQ.  Mentors contact their 'mentees' approximately every 3 weeks and are invited to attend various social activities throughout the semester.  Mentors can attend the UQ Mentors Personal Development program that is not available to other UQ students.
 
The development program is designed to build mentors leadership, communication and problem solving skills which will enhance their CVs and employment prospects.  Mentors are awarded a certificate from the DVC (Academic) as recognition of their contribution to the success of other UQ students.  See here for further information.  

This program is organised by David Lim of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Volunteers will teach English to children aged 8 to 12, in Fujian and Guangdong provinces. The program runs from 6-18 August 2013. Previous teaching experience is helpful but not essential. Apply by Monday 15 April 2013 and see the brochure and website for more information.

 

The Bridge is Australia's first student formed and led volunteer organisation. Based at University of Queensland, their aim is to promote and organise valuable volunteer experiences for UQ staff, students and other interested individuals.

UQ will host the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI 2013) at the St Lucia campus from
6-13 July, 2013

Expressions of Interest are sought from students, staff, alumni and interested community members to work as volunteers for the event, both before and during. The IOI is one of the most recognised computer science competitions in the world. The winners of the IOI are some of the best young computer scientists in the world; with teams from some 90 countries competing over 8 days. It is anticipated that well in excess of 500 international delegates will attend the event.

Volunteering Queensland matches potential volunteers with charitable organisations who are in need of help. The volunteering opportunities here are very diverse and include everything from planting trees to visiting the elderly.

The Education, Research and Policy team at Volunteering Qld is looking to build a creative team to plan, develop and assist in the implementation of a National Student Engagement Week in 2013. The week will be led by Volunteering Qld in collaboration with a number of universities.

You will need a strong interest in volunteering and community engagement, commit to one day a week for your time in the project (outside of assessment periods at uni),  and be interested in working intensively and at the cutting edge of this field.  A range of potential professional development opportunities will be available. While the project will run from July 2012 to October 2013 – the first team will commence work in July and work through until November 2012.

VoRTCS ("vortex") is a non-profit, volunteer-run program and a Special Works of the St Vincent de Paul Society. VoRTCS is based in South Brisbane, and currently operates in Brisbane from Logan in the south, to Bracken Ridge in the north, and west towards Ipswich (VoRTCS is not yet operating on the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba or outside Brisbane).

VoRTCS aims to assist and encourage refugee families to take up the opportunities available to all Australians, whether they be educational, social or vocational. A major part of the VoRTCS Program is the Refugee Tutoring program, which provides free in-home English language and community support. VoRTCS also runs several other programs aimed at assisting refugee families to settle into life in Australia.

The aim of the Indigenous Volunteer Program is to provide a unique opportunity to experience life as a volunteer in an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community. There are currently five Volunteer Programs available, but the number is continuously growing.

Welcome to Australia is a non-government organisation focused on engaging everyday Australians in cultivating a culture of welcome towards refugees, asylum seekers and other new migrants to Australia.

Wild Mob is a not-for-profit, non-political organisation providing hands-on environmental projects in remote and iconic Australian locations. We are dedicated to protecting Australia’s unique biodiversity through practical conservation and rehabilitation programs. Volunteers can expect a balanced mix of environmental work, biodiversity education and plenty of time to enjoy the natural surroundings by hiking, snorkelling or simply relaxing. Each project offers its own experience, from a secluded island in the Whitsundays to rugged coastline in Tasmania to views of Australia’s highest mountain peaks.
