This year the University of Queensland Interfaculty Competitions (UQIC) student club will turn 100!
The club, which seeks to create a positive campus culture through social sport, has been supporting UQ students since the clubs first recorded competition in 1912.
Tate Stubbs, President of UQIC, said that since the clubs inception the UQIC has sought to provide every student with a chance to represent their faculty in a fun and healthy manner.
“We are truly inclusive of the whole UQ student population, and host rugby, touch rugby league, basketball and netball competitions with over 700 UQ students competing each year,” Mr Stubbs said.
UQIC coordinated a variety of sporting events for their members throughout 2012, and even received a UQ Sponsorship Grant from the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE) to support a UQIC Student Society Executive touch rugby competition.
Mr Stubbs said that UQIC was motivated to organise the competition to bring presidents from clubs and societies together, and to provide them with an opportunity to network and bond as a team.
“We understand that the heavy time commitments associated with study, jobs and executive positions can create a preventative barrier to networking with members of other student executives.
“By hosting the competition, we hoped to remove that barrier and help facilitate a positive network of information sharing and cooperation throughout the student base,” Mr Stubbs said.
Acting Director of the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE), Dr Jessica Gallagher, said that OUE is proud to offer UQ Sponsorship Grants to support student leadership and initiative.
“OUE recognises that student associations and societies play a pivotal role in enhancing the student experience and creating a welcoming and dynamic campus culture.
“UQ has over 150 clubs and societies which cater to a wide range of cultural, academic, sporting, and leisure interests, and we encourage student clubs, associations and societies to apply for a UQ Sponsorship Grant to support their initiatives,” Dr Gallagher said.
UQ Sponsorship Grants are available to UQ student clubs, societies and associations to support student-led activities that enhance student engagement, leadership skills and professional development.
Applications can be submitted to undergrad@uq.edu.au between early March and late October each year.
