CSIRO vacation scholarships
Vacation scholarships offer science undergraduate students a ‘hands on’ learning opportunity in a field of mutual interest to the applicant and CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research (CMAR). Scholarships may be offered at specified CMAR sites between November 2011 and February 2012. The sites are: Brisbane (Queensland); Floreat (WA); and Hobart (Tasmania). Candidates will be assessed on their academic record and suitability for the research project selected. Project details can be found on pages 3–7 of this document. Scholarships are offered on a full time basis (36 ¾ hrs/wk) for a minimum of eight weeks, and attract a weekly stipend payment of A$600.
Assistance with travel costs may be available to students approved for a scholarship at a site distant from their home/university base. Scholars are not officers of CSIRO, and have no entitlements to leave, but are provided with workers’ compensation coverage under Comcare while on CSIRO premises. Scholars are expected to keep normal office hours and work under regular, close supervision.
Vacation scholars get to:
• put ‘university theory’ into practice in a working environment;
• build relationships with scientific teams;
• better understand scientific concepts relevant to further studies; and
• learn about Australian and international science directions.
