Application procedures
Postgraduate students of the School of HPRC receive an email circular at the start of each year advertising the tutoring positions available and the application procedure. In addition, the text of this email is placed in the School’s newsletter ‘Quadrivia’.
Applications are sent to the School Office by a set date. Next they are circulated to the appropriate discipline convenors who consult with academic staff about appointments. Lists of successful and unsuccessful applicants are returned to the School Office by the discipline convenors. The School’s Tutor Co-ordinator liaises with the School Manager so that appropriate letters are sent to all successful and unsuccessful applicants.
Employment and payroll forms
The School Manager oversees the management of all such forms in respect of the School’s tutors.
Induction and Training
HPRC runs a formal induction session for new tutors each semester. This session is of 3 hours duration and the new tutors are paid to attend. Those who have been inducted previously do not attend. The session is run by the Tutor Co-ordinator with the assistance of the School Manager.
At least once a year (and often once a semester), HPRC offers a formal training programme for tutors. This programme, which is in fact open to all HPRC postgraduates, typically involves 4 separate sessions and is of 10 hours duration. It is facilitated by the Tutor Co-ordinator and is based on the 2004 TEDI publication, A Tutor’s Guide to Teaching and Learning at UQ.
Various members of the School participate, along with representatives from TEDI, the Social Sciences &Humanities Library, and Student Services. TEDI supports the programme with signed certificates for the CVs of those who complete the programme
Resources
Comprehensive induction packs and training programme packs are given to all participants in the induction and training sessions. These packs refer to the 2004 TEDI publication, A Tutor’s Guide to Teaching and Learning at UQ and to appropriate sections of the UQ Handbook of University Practices and Policies.
A website for UQ Tutors has been developed: http://www.uq.edu.au/tutors. It contains excellent material covering all aspects of the tutoring experience at UQ.
