What are the entry requirements?
  • A  Bachelor’s degree in any discline from a recognised university or other tertiary educational institution.
  • International students must also meet English proficiency requirements specified by The University of Queensland (please see http://www.uq.edu.au under “UQ International”). If international students have IELTS scores, the minimum requirement is 6.5 with 6 in writing. If international students have been studying in Australia for more than two years or have other English proficiency test results, please visit the above website or contact International Admissions Section for details.
  • A minimum of 1 year full-time teaching experience (TESOL programs only). 
Is prior teaching experience essential for admission?
Only for the TESOL programs:(I)Graduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics (TESOL), (II) Graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics (TESOL) and (III) Master in Applied Linguistics (TESOL). Teaching experience is not required for  these programs:  (i) Graduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics (ii) Graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics, or  (iii) Master in Applied Linguistics.
 
Is it possible to get credit for previous education and experience?
Yes. In some instances it is possible to receive up to one semester's credit toward completion. All applications will be assessed against the criteria and guidelines set out in the University's Handbook of Administrative Procedures.
 
Is the degree available externally?
Only in part. From 2009 three courses will be offered through online delivery.  These courses are SLAT7706, SLAT7805 and SLAT7860. Students will need to visit campus for lectures for the other courses.
 
How many courses in each semester and how long is the program?
Semester 1 = Graduate Certificate
Semester 1 + 2 = Graduate Diploma
Semester 1 + 2 + 3 = MA
 
Where can I look at the timetable?
The first semester timetable for 2011 will be available on mySInet from 1st January 2011. Just click on Course & Timetable Info ,which is one of the guest links on the menu on the left  hand side (you do not need a username and password to look up the timetable) , and select semester and course.
 
Can I study part time?
Domestic students may study part time.  International students must study full-time because they are required to complete the program in the shortest allowable time.
 
Is there a mid-year intake?
Yes.

How much is the tuition fee for Australian and international students?

Most courses are worth 2 units. Fees are subject to annual review and approval by the Senate of The University of Queensland. Standard semester load is 4 courses (8 units).

A student's actual tuition fee may vary in accordance with their choice of field of study or electives. The University reviews fees annually.
 
Is this program covered by HECS or PELS?
There is a scheme called “FEE-HELP” which provides a loan to Australian students.  
 
Are there any scholarships?
The Faculty of Arts offers a limited number of tuition fee scholarships for international students. Details are available at http://www.arts.uq.edu.au/index.html?page=44057
 
Is there a quota for this program?
No.
