Professor Max LuMax Lu is Professor in the School of Engineering and the Australian Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology and the Director of the ARC Centre for Functional Nanomaterials.

Max is also a Federation Fellow and his research is in the areas of clean energy, environment and health care. It is interdisciplinary across engineering, biology and chemistry.

All his students are drawn to him by his outstanding reputation as an innovative researcher. He leads by example, is supportive, sensitive and challenging and he has created a highly productive team. The students particularly value his approachability and his clear and open communication.

Max expects his students to publish 5 or 6 papers in high ranking international journals by the time they graduate and he encourages them to attend conferences to present their work. The group’s publication record certainly bears this out.

Max sends his students out as Young Science Ambassadors and 14 PhD students have so far reached out to more than 60 primary and middle schools in Queensland.

He has successfully supervised to completion 17 research students and has 17 currently under supervision.

Max has also extended his mentoring and research training activities to all research students in the university by giving presentations on how to get published and how to improve quality and achieve excellence in research. He is an inspiration and role model for all.
