Organisational Unit: School of Integrative Biology and the School of Physical Sciences

Hugh Possingham is Professor in the School of Integrative Biology and the School of Physical Sciences and the Director of the Ecology Centre.

Hugh has successfully supervised to completion 16 research students and has 16 currently under supervision.

All his students come from outside UQ and they are drawn to him by his outstanding reputation as an innovative researcher. He mentors and guides them through their candidature. They value most highly the respect and friendship he affords them, and his approachability. The students particularly value his sincere commitment and dedication to maintaining regular and frequent meaningful face-to-face meetings and the range of discussion opportunities he provides - the one-on- one meetings, small group meetings and social morning teas - as this clearly influences the collegiality that his students feel with each other, the lab's post docs and Hugh himself.

Hugh strongly encourages and equips his students to publish in significant international journals and to attend conferences to present their work.

Hugh’s skills as a supervisor have been attested to by thesis examiners' highly complimentary remarks regarding the quality of the theses submitted. Most of the theses require no or minor amendments.

For attracting virtually all of his research students from outside UQ and being an inspiration and role model -

The University of Queensland presents Professor Hugh Possingham – an outstanding supervisor and worthy recipient of a University of Queensland Award for Excellence in Research Higher Degree Supervision.
