Established in 2008, The University of Queensland’s (UQ) Summer Research (SR) Program promotes undergraduate and postgraduate research projects across all disciplines at UQ, provides scholarships to support students, coordinates training and dissemination opportunities to enhance student learning, and nurtures students to become future researchers. In the summer of 2012–13 alone, the UQ SR Program enabled more than 500 undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students from across Australia and 18 other countries, together with 325 academic supervisors, to participate in authentic, engaging learning experiences. These students engaged in diverse research experiences, gained new skills and contributed to the creation of new knowledge, all within the context of learning in a research intensive university. Essential to the program’s success is its reputation for excellent student outcomes and quality administrative support. In its five years of operation, the UQ SR Program has helped more than 1800 students experience learning through authentic, independent research. The program continues to evolve and expand, offering research experiences combined with skills development, career clarification and an opportunity to participate in a large, cross-disciplinary undergraduate research conference.
