UQ SMART is an alliance between UQ and more than 40 industry partners that focusses on the issue of business sustainability, involves industry in curricula design and enables students to engage in a mix of innovative learning activities. Since starting in 2007, UQ SMART has grown to be the most active and recognised of UQ’s initiatives relating to business sustainability, and carbon and energy management. In 2012, UQ SMART was recognised for its contribution to student learning and was awarded the Australian Commonwealth Government’s Business and Higher Education Round Table award for Best Higher Education and Training Industry Collaboration, one of the most prestigious honours of the Australian higher education sector. The UQ SMART team has used the alliance to pioneer the design and delivery of a range of globally unique interactive learning simulations, called the Carbon Game. Over the past three years, the UQ SMART team has delivered Carbon Game learning activities to more than 4,000 participants in more than 15 countries, to numerous Government agencies in China, Nigeria, the UAE, Cambodia and Chile, to some of the world’s largest corporations, such as the Chinese National Offshore Oil Corporation, and to leading development agencies, such as the World Bank, the United Nations Development Program and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations.
