BASc Leth., PhD McM.

Dr Jason Tangen is a teaching and research academic in the School of Psychology, who explores the nature of expertise and the development of competence in professional practice. He has developed several courses that range in difficulty from a second year course on critical thinking to an honours-level course on multivariate statistics. During the last several years, Dr Tangen has eliminated lectures completely in all his courses. Instead, his students watch videos, take quizzes, and discuss the content online before attending class. This “flip” from teaching to learning has allowed him to devote his formal classes to discussions, demonstrations, debate, peer interactions, and time to think. This year, Dr Tangen has invited the rest of the world to join his class by offering UQ’s first massive open online course called Think101x: The Science of Everyday Thinking, which has attracted more than 100,000 registrations. It is one of the most popular and highly rated online courses in the world. His passion for teaching has been recognised through a Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence, a UQ Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning, and nomination by the Faculty Dean’s Scholars as an outstanding teacher every year that he has been teaching.
