The University of Queensland fosters and acknowledges excellence in its learning and teaching environment by recognising and rewarding its academic and general staff through three annual award programs.

Nominations for the 2009 award programs are invited by the closing date of Friday 24 April. Selected nominees will be invited to provide a full submission by Friday 24 July. Comprehensive details of nomination and submission requirements are contained in the guidelines appropriate to each award.

Awards for Teaching Excellence
In 1988 the Awards for Teaching Excellence (formerly Awards for Excellence in Teaching) were inaugurated to reward University teachers who had been recognised by their students and their peers for sustained excellence in teaching. These awards are open to academic staff with teaching or teaching/research appointments who have made a broad and deep contribution to enhancing the quality of learning and teaching at The University of Queensland. Five awards are granted each year at the discretion of Teaching and Learning Committee. Each award winner will receive a grant of $10,000.
Self-nominations will not be accepted. Candidates must be nominated by at least five people who are members of the University’s academic staff and current or former students.

Awards for Programs that Enhance Learning
In 2002 the University presented its first Awards for Programs that Enhance Learning (formerly Awards for the Enhancement of Student Learning) to recognise programs and services that enhance the quality of student learning and the quality of the student experience at The University of Queensland. They are awarded to projects/services initiated by curriculum teams, groups or organisational units.
There are seven award categories with up to four awards granted each year at the discretion of the Teaching and Learning Committee. Each award winner will receive a grant of $10,000.
Candidates may self-nominate.

Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning
This category, introduced in 2006, recognises the diverse contributions that individuals and teams make to the quality of student learning, student engagement and/or the overall student experience at The University of Queensland. Nomination is open to academic staff, general staff, sessional staff and institutional associates. Winners are selected at the discretion of the Teaching and Learning Committee and will receive a grant of $4,000.
Candidates may self-nominate.

Awards Ceremony
The achievements of recipients of Awards for Teaching Excellence, Awards for Programs that Enhance Learning and Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning will be celebrated at a ceremony to be held at Customs House during Teaching and Learning Week in November 2009.
Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC)
The University has a proud history of recognising its excellent teachers which is reflected by its success in the national Australian Learning and Teaching Council (formerly Carrick Institute) Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT). Each year eligible recipients of University Awards for Teaching Excellence, Awards for Programs that Enhance Learning and Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning will be invited to submit expressions of interest for the consideration of The University of Queensland’s selection committees for the national awards and citations.
Awards for Excellence in Research Higher Degree Supervision: Selection Process
The success of the Awards for Excellence in Teaching led to the establishment of the Awards for Excellence in Research Higher Degree Supervision to encourage, recognise and reward sustained excellence in research higher degree supervision. Up to three Awards, valued at $10,000 each, may be made each year.
