In early 2011, the Australian Government announced its intention to cease funding the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC).  The Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC - previously named the Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education) was one of the major initiatives of the Commonwealth Government’s 2003 Our Universities – Backing Australia’s Future reform package and provided a national focus for the enhancement of learning and teaching in Australian higher education providers. 
From 1 January 2012, the awards and grants functions of the ALTC will be administered by Office of Learning and Teaching.  UQ will continue to run internal selection and endorsement processes for each of the programs.

Learning and Teaching Grants Scheme

Funding will be provided for a number of programs:

  • innovation and development grants
  • strategic priorities
  • seed projects
  • leadership and extension grants.


Up to 5 national teaching fellowships, up to 5 mid-career fellowships, and a number of secondments to the Office for Learning and Teaching will be offered.

Citations and Awards

The Australian Awards for University Teaching comprise citations and four award types recognising teaching excellence and outstanding contributions to student learning:

  • Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning
  • Awards for Programs that Enhance Learning
  • Awards for Teaching Excellence
  • Prime Minister's Award for Australian University Teacher of the Year
  • Career Achievement Award
