Winner: Associate Professor Janet Wiles
Janet Wiles is Associate Professor in the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering and the School of Psychology.
Janet’s approach to supervision is characterized by working on the relationship with each individual student, giving timely and considered feedback and developing innovative ways of interacting with her students. This results in several highly desirable outcomes: Janet’s students feel very motivated, strongly encouraged and enthusiastic about their research. She also encourages them to interact with each other in a collegiate and professional manner, teaching them communication and team work skills.
She has completed 10 research students with 7 currently under her supervision. She impressed us with her ‘extreme writing’ technique that is highly successful in getting students who prefer to write code to write words, sentences, thesis chapters and papers. Comments on theses from examiners often attest to the quality of the work as well as the written report.
Most of Janet’s students have gone on to postdoctoral positions in prestigious institutions here and overseas. Others have moved into industry and senior research roles.
For the exceptional care she takes with the relationships, innovative interactions she has with research students and the ‘extreme writing’ concept that works for students who prefer writing code rather than words -
The University of Queensland presents Associate Professor Janet Wiles – an outstanding supervisor and worthy recipient of a University of Queensland Award for Excellence in Research Higher Degree Supervision.
