Innovations in Teaching and Learning in the TC Beirne School of Law
The first innovation to be showcased is Dr Ann Black's practice of getting her students to write and publish 'magazine' style articles as assessment in her course LAWS5167 Asian Legal Systems: Contributing to the in-house Asian Law Bulletin represents a learning tool through which students can learn from each other and prepares students for another dimension to a career in law.
The second is Prof Andreas Schloenhardt's enormously popular Migrant Smuggling and Human Trafficking Working Groups: These groups involve an innovative teaching practice that actively engages students, enhances their learning experience, and integrates this experience with the university’s research activity. The Groups involve inter-disciplinary teaching involving academic staff from law and international relations which also connects closely to other undergraduate courses currently on offer in both disciplines.
Finally, there is the ever popular Pro Bono Centre: Each year, the UQ Pro Bono Centre affords around 175 law students opportunities to (a) develop their legal and transferable practical skills, (b) develop ethical standards and a sense of social and civic responsibility, and (c) provide valuable assistance to disadvantaged members of the Queensland community.
