Research strengths

The School has over a long period of time been seen as the benchmark for social work research, according to the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW). The School has the infrastructure in place to support both small and large scale projects, and to establish collaborative partnerships both in Australia and overseas. The focus of research includes defining and clarifying social issues, enhancing service delivery at both individual and community level, and initiating and developing policy and programs. Our School was recently assessed as the leading School of Social Work schools in Australia. We produce more doctoral graduates than any other Australian provider of social work education.

Expert teaching staff

We are nationally and internationally recognised for our high-quality research and our staff are leaders in their fields.

We have a multi-disciplinary base, with staff expertise in areas such as social work and human service practice, social policy, community development, psychology, sociology, family therapy, counselling, social anthropology, human geography and criminology.

Robust Programs

Our programs offer students a comprehensive and intellectually stimulating education that provides an excellent balance of theoretical and practical elements. Students will develop and hone skills in the key areas of effective communication, creativity, professional practice, analytical thinking and critical judgment. These are skills that will not only prepare students for a career in the human services sector, but are the foundation for success in life.

Our social work programs address the current high demand for qualified workers in the community services sector. The curriculum prepares students for practice in a wide variety of roles, but also offers specialisation in key practice areas. Students can choose to concentrate in the three areas of Child, Youth and Family, Health and Aging or Mental Health.

We provide students with the skills and knowledge base needed for high-quality leadership in complex practice and policy environments.

We are one of the largest providers of postgraduate social work and human services education in the country and have produced more doctoral graduates than any other Australian social work program.
