Virginia Skuse is a descendant of the Goorang people from the South East Queensland Coastal area.  She grew up in the town of Bundaberg and moved to Brisbane in her early teens to find employment.  Virginia's education was limited as she grew up in a family where resources were scarce and education was regarded as a luxury.

Virginia started studying high school subjects in her early thirties and applied to study Social Work at The University of Queensland.

Virginia Skuse found studying at the University to be a positive time as she felt the subjects that she enrolled in greatly improved her knowledge and made her feel empowered allowing her to share her Indigenous experience with staff and students.  It also gave her the confidence to be a strong advocate for indigenous people and the ability to speak out about confronting societal issues.

Virginia found the teaching staff at the university to be very supportive and encouraging in the subjects she chose.  As a student she always felt confident that her contribution to topics/issues studied were important.

Since gaining her degree, Virginia has been employed in the area of Child Protection both in the Department of Child Safety and currently in the Department of Communities.  She has had the opportunity on many occasions in these positions to be an advocate for indigenous children, families and communities.
