The Walter and Eliza Hall Trust Opportunity Scholarship in Social Work
Applications for this scholarship are now open. Please click here to access the application form.
Applications will close at 5pm on Monday 19th March 2012.
During the middle of the nineteenth century, Englishman Walter Hall came to Australia with only a few pounds in his pocket to seek his fortune in the gold rush. After a shaky start he became a very successful and wealthy businessman. Much of his wealth came from Queensland's Mt. Morgan gold mine. He also acquired substantial holdings in the booming pastoral industry and his entrepreneurial skills also extended to transport. He was the last owner of Cobb and Co, the horse-drawn coach line of Australian history and tradition. He died in 1911 aged 80 years.
Both Walter and his wife, Eliza, were active philanthropists during their life together. In the year following her husband's death Eliza set up a charitable trust with a donation of £1,000,000. It was named the Walter and Eliza Hall Trust.
Since then the Trust has helped thousands of Australians in their time of crisis. Many others have been helped to reach their full potential.
The School of Social Work and Human Services, in conjunction with representatives of the Trust, will select one recipient each year for the “Walter and Eliza Hall Trust Opportunity Scholarship in Social Work”. The recipient must demonstrate financial need, and also have performed satisfactorily in the program to date. Grade point averages will be considered, however the grade point average will not solely be the determinant in satisfactory progress – the recipients behaviour, class attendance, dedication to the program and career aspirations are also a part of the selection process. In particular, the Trust is interested to hear about why you are studying social work, and where you see yourself as a social worker when you graduate. In the spirit of the Trust, they would like to assist a social work student in financial need who is aspiring to positively contribute back to Australian society in the social work field once they graduate.
Once the recipient is selected and approved through the UQ Undergraduate Scholarships section, the recipient will receive further correspondence from the Trust. A representative from the Trust will be in touch with the recipient throughout the year about their studies and for information about what the scholarship money went towards by way of equipment (e.g. computers), materials (e.g. textbooks, copy cards) and other study-related items (for example, the cost of transport directly to attend practicum), for the Bachelor of Social Work program. Please note that only in exceptional circumstances should the funds be used for payment of day-to-day living expenses such as rent, utility bills etc.
