“I have been working as a community case manager with Ipswich Mental Health Service since graduation last year. To be perfectly honest, mental health was the last place I ever thought I’d end up in. So a very wise friend (Anita) asked me of my perception of working in Mental Health. Turns out my thoughts did not match reality, and so very bravely I fronted up to the Mental Health unit in Ipswich to chat with a fellow student and his supervisor. Following this very informal and enlightened chat, I was directed immediately to go to the Health Plaza, as a position was vacant. One hour later, I marched out of Mental Health office after another very informal chat with my now team leader, with a three month locum under my wing.
The biggest kick I get out of working in Mental Health is the pleasure of believing in the Recovery Model and Strength Based Practice. There are not many jobs where we have the autonomy to schedule our own work day. Every morning we have a team meeting, which I look forward to. This is when I have my morning coffee and breakfast, as well as the social aspect. On Fridays we debrief and chill at the pub across the road…this is the best day of all.”
