“As new graduate I am enjoying the feeling of freshness and the new world that I am in at the moment. I am very enthusiastic about my work and I feel this is the beginning of a wonderful and joyful journey of my career. I appreciate the knowledge that I gained at The University of Queensland which I will treasure forever. I never realised until now how much I have learned from the university because my everyday practice reflects on what I have learned from the University.

I am one of the community development team at Kyabra Community Association. I was offered employment at the end of 2007 in order to continue work that I was involved in during my fourth year placement. I feel so privileged being part of such a unique team and great organisation because Kyabra’s strength based approach is absolutely fits with my own practice framework.

My role at Kyabra is to support African families who have recently settled in the Kyabra area. I met these families during my placement 2007 and they shared with me their feelings of isolation and concerns about barriers relating to their kids’ education. These families inspired me a lot because of their resilience and hope. I absolutely believe this is a great strength people have. These families experienced trauma of civil war and have overcome a lot of barriers. Working with them taught me a lot. I can relate sometimes to what these families are going through because I had similar experiences in the past. It is such a privilege working with them. The things that I like about my work are, I have a supportive team, learn new things everyday and meet people with whom I share similar values and beliefs.”
