For students considering studying social work at UQ, Corinne advises: “Go for it!"

For Corinne Nielsen, a degree in Social Work has meant continued employment.

“I was employed throughout my degree in various human service organisations and landed my first job as a ‘qualified social worker’ before I had even formally graduated! There is so much available to social workers and I have never been out of work,” she says.

Corinne believes the feeling of giving back to the community that accompanies a career in social work is rewarding and one-of-a-kind.

Corinne is currently working as a social worker for the Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Association of Queensland (SBHQ).

“I work as a social worker in a multidisciplinary team travelling state-wide to provide services to children and their families who are living with Spina Bifida and or Hydrocephalus.”

Her work involves visiting schools and community based organisations, and engaging with relevant stakeholders to ensure the children and families are able to access relevant support.

Corinne’s role also includes working at the Royal Children’s Hospital in the Spinal Clinic to support children and their families’ access to medical intervention, and providing professional social work practice to the medical multidisciplinary team.

For students considering studying social work at UQ, Corinne advises: “Go for it! There are so many opportunities and so many different areas to sink your teeth into- the world is your oyster. Nothing beats giving back to the community, and finding a deeper, more compassionate part of ourselves in the process. I have no doubt that I will leave this world knowing that I have done some really amazing things and given back to fellow beings, and that to me is just humbling!”

Corinne continues to give back to UQ working as a tutor in the School of Social Work and Human Services.
