Become a SWAHS Peer Assistant
Do you enjoy helping people?
Would you like to assist other social work students?
Applications are now open to be part of the SWAHS Peer Assistance Service. If you can spare one hour per week to volunteer, you could become a SWAHS Student Assistant.
What is the SWAHS Peer Assistance Service?
The Peer Assistance Service allows experienced SWAHS students to provide hands-on subject-specific and/or English language-support to small groups of SWAHS students.
What do you have to do?
We are looking for high achieving, conscientious social work students. Applicants must have good communication skills, enjoy their academic experience and have a passion for helping others. As a SWAHS Peer Assistant, you will be trained to provide subject-specific and/or English language support to other students within the School of Social Work. We ask for only one hour of face-to-face contact per week to participate in the program and you will be provided with ongoing support. This is a great opportunity to make a real difference in the academic journey of your peers and potential future colleagues.
What do you get out of it?
All Peer Assistants who volunteer the minimum number of hours will be acknowledged by the SWAHS Head of School, Professor Howard Karger, with a Certificate of Participation and a Letter of Appreciation – a valuable addition to your resume in this competitive employment arena. Electing to be part of the inaugural team means that there may be opportunities to be a team leader/trainer in the future. Students who have participated in similar peer assistance programs report a number of personal benefits as a result of their involvement, including:
· increased subject-specific insight,
· greater confidence in working with people, and
· a sense of personal satisfaction from knowing that they have been able to help others.
You could make a real difference in the academic journey of your peers.
For more information or to express your interest to participate in the SWAHS Peer Assistance Service, please contact Dr Kim Oosthuysen at swahs.mentor@uq.edu.au.
Kind regards,
Dr Kim Oosthuysen
