The University of Queensland’s status as the leading provider of social work education in Queensland drew Adriana back to continue her studies.
For students who already have a degree in another field, postgraduate studies in social work can help to enhance employability or open up a new career path. After completing post-graduate study in social work Adriana now works as a Senior Social Worker with the North Coast Area Health Service in the Tweed Valley Clinic.
This Clinic is the Acute Psychiatric Ward in the Tweed Hospital.
“My current position involves working with the patients and their families in the Acute Psychiatric Ward, performing psycho-social assessments and running group and family meetings. It also encompasses counselling and support services, referring patients to support agencies and preparing patients for Guardianship Tribunals, Magistrates Hearings and Mental Health Review Tribunal hearings.”
Adriana credits the inspiring lecturers and support system at UQ, as well as the 3rd and 4th Year Placements, with preparing her for work in the real world. In particular, the small class sizes allowed for a personal learning experience.
“I enjoyed being part of a small group of approximately 30 students. There are a few of us who still remain in contact. I liked the support we got from the lecturers who knew us personally.”
Finding work after graduation was easy for Adriana, who said that the connections she made during her placements put her in a good position for job offers.
“It took me three months to get a job and UQ qualifications were both recognised and valued by potential employers.”
Adriana’s advice to future students is to do as much volunteer work as possible during the degree. “It is essential to get as much experience as possible. Having a great sense of humour helps as well.”
