50 Year Anniversary

In 1956 ten students enrolled in a new course; the Diploma of Social Studies at The University of Queensland. It was at this time, that the School was created. In 2006, we celebrated the 50 year anniversary of our school.
The School of Social Work and Applied Human Sciences is located in the Chamberlain Building on The University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus. The Chamberlain Building was named after Emeritus Professor Edna Chamberlain, AM, BCom, Hon. DPhil, DipSocStud MA.
Professor Chamberlain was appointed Head of Department in 1973 and foundation Professor of Social Work in 1974. Edna Chamberlain was the first woman appointed as professor in the field of social work in Australia. She was Head of the Department from 1973 to 1983, and Dean of the Faculty from July 1975 to August 1976, and again from January 1983 until June 1986.
Emeritus Professor Chamberlain's contribution to professional education and community service have been recognised by awards of Member of the Order of Australia in 1988 and Doctor of Philosophy honoris causa, The University of Queensland, in 1995.
